To take preventive action so that the President does not launch a war in Iran, can Congress stop the President? Experts from both sides believe so. If Bush were to violate such a law, they urged, Congress should file a lawsuit against him, and begin impeachment proceedings.

John Dean wrote this article. For those of you who don't remmeber who he is look him up. He was the key person that testified and was instrumental in bringing down Nixon.

However, the corruption from lobby control today is even worse than it was during the Nixon years.

Will Congress grow a backbone? Maybe that's the first question to ask.

I don't believe anyone is questioning congressional authority. The question remains whether or not Congress is going to do anything and whether or not as it's been suggested in many posts it's timing is appropriate

Your remarks about corruption, whether true or not, is YOUR personal clarion call.

Your totally correct to ask "maybe that's the first question to ask". I hope that was the motive behind the post. You usually post only to stir up partisan feelings. Read on as to what happens as the debate turns into vile partisan name calling.

I'm beginning to think that most of what you post has merit but that the readers misconstrued views are without merit.

John Dean wrote a book documenting this. The title? "Worse than Watergate."

Congressional spine? With a few exceptions the answer is "Dream on Alice; you're back in Wonderland."!!!

Congress is up to its neck in political corruption. No, no backbone, because it would be their back in trouble as well as the President. I feel sorry for all the Democrat voters that thought this congress would save the world. They will do nothing. Their campaign promises were all talk. Now, though they are seeing something they never saw coming, their own voters are begining to grouse about their "do nothing" attitude.

Most of us are annoyed with both Republican corruption and with the wishy-washy Democrats. Se we have the choice between corruption and spinelessness. One you can count on to screw you; the other you just never know.

With several investigative committees going on, & their reaching out to qualified Constitutional experts, I don't understand your statement. What did people expect them to do? They want to TALK about the war, and can't even get that started because of the republicans thwarting it. It's how the process works, and republicans have the votes to do that. If Americans wanted more done, they shouldn't have reelected republicans. Seems rather unfair to 'blame' democrats for what the voters did. (Or didn't do).

We, the people must hound our Congressional representatives. These corrupt and spineless idiots need to get off their dead butts and do something now to put a stop to any further invasions, wars, occupations, whatever. This administration is so fixated on its grand vision, it has completely disregarded the oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution.

        Here's the link: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/

Call, write, demonstrate. Do whatever you can to make sure that no further crapola is begun. The drums are already beating to invade Iran. Stop it, NOW!

And if he does not stop, Bush and Cheney must both be impeached.

The House has several investigative committees in place. They're gathering evidence. I don't understand, really, what people expected them to do in one month. They're interviewing Constitutional experts for their advise on stopping this. But even despite that, the Senate has enough votes to thwart everything they do. Bush has the power of the veto on everything they do. The republicans are already thwarting the six major bills passed by House, and stopping speedy passage of them. Why is no one yelling about the republicans?

Sound of reason, interesting! "violations of the constitution" Do you see any responsibility being placed on the courts? What's the solution? You seem to be despairing. How do you see the States being able to recover power lost? This has been going on since before the Civil War.

Thank you, Spadecaller for a great article with fabulous, information filled references. Now if the Senate can get past partisan gridlock and move with the House to require a formal Congressional declaration of war before invading or bombing Iran, we can hope to ratchet down the Iraq disaster without making it ten times worse than it already is.

Soundofreason, what you're advocating is in my mind worse than Mr. Bush's type of government. Shadow groups. Secret societies. Next you'll probably advocate death squads. With anyone who doesn't agree with you as a target. Does the term "anarchy" ring a bell. We live by rule of law. You may not agree and it may not happen as fast as it needs to but it still works. Congress is still capable of doing its job. Let the system do its job.

I will be posting an article about oath of allegiance by prospective representatives to a political office.

In my opinion it will be a manifest of people's voice in the process of Government.

Purse strings are all that's necessary to stop the White House from going to war.

The question remains would this administration fake an attack on one of our own ships? This is a situation too close to the contention that our government deliberately destroyed the WTC for me.

Deliberately killing our own citizens or soldiers to start a war is a monstrous act as opposed to the simple incompetence we have so far witnessed.

I still do not see war with Iran becoming a reality.

I don't usually like to speculate about conspiracy theories unless the circumstantial evidence is astonishing and overwhelming. The Gulf of Tonkin incident which touched off the Vietnam "Conflict" was bogus and contrived. Since that historical happening, one should always be suspicious of the covert forces from the military industrial complex that will go to great measures to bring our nation into war.

I used to work with a guy at Juvenile Probation in San Diego. No matter what was going wrong he'd always give out a big dreamy grin and say "no problem". Once our work crew actually came under fire from some dirt-bags target practising with 22's some distance away. The little slugs were hitting around us. I ordered my crew to run for the vans. The other crew leader, gave out a big dreamy grin and said, "No problem". The bosses just loved his attitude.

I'm wondering if I can adopt this approach to present day politics....

History is the judge and so far the Democrats have proven the hypothesis, "They are Cowardly".

Under Pelosi the only bill I have heard of is the NON BINDING RESOLUTION.

Where is the Democraic outrage against the war or even a bill sponsoring withdrawal. NONE. America is 2/3 against the war yet the Democrats will not put their political lives on line and advocate withdrawal NOW. Its all a sham on the American public. They are afraid of being perceived as against our military. What, this is an aggressive war on the world stage by America. The world sees it, the American public sees it, but our cowardly Democratic representatives are failing to see the obvious.

Pelolsi's leadership I equate with King George's Leadership, non existent and outright inane. Get a bigger jet Pelosi for all your corporate and lobbyist friends. You sure are not doing much in Washington. Go help your Governor learn how to ski, you will accomplish more in that direction of leadership.

What would be the reason for invading Iran? Our reason for invading Iraq in the first place was as a deterrent to Iran. They have been the main problen ever since Carter empowered them in 1979. Having a country full of American military in Iraq bordering Iran is much more powerful than two carrier task forces floating in the Persian Gulf. At this point we should continue the economic pressure on Iran, which seems to be having some effect as well as trying to contain Iran's support for the terrorist by making public their involvement in supplying weapons and manpower in Iraq. Also don't forget to pray that Israel does not go Nuclear on Tehran. That would definitely be a doomsday scenario with no winners.

Noooo, actually we started out with 9-11,went to WMD, from there to bringing democracy to Iraq.

The Neo-Con position paper laid out the groundwork for the Iraqi war. However,in the origional sceme, oil production would be enhanced, paying for the whole thing!!!

Dick(head) Cheney shot that one down,as the oil lobby wanted production curbed drasticly, to control the flow of oil;creating false scarcity, and boosting profits into the "obscene" level.

Look, Iran is no sweetheart, but it's entirely possible they are developing nuclear power simply for the generation of electricity. What we should be doing is using the leverage that the UN Sanctions and Mr. Bush's saber rattling have generated to keep a full complement of the IAEA Inspectors in there to monitor what they are up to. If they ever do head toward building nukes, estimates are it will take them up to 10 years or more. When done, they will need to test. Then, whoever is president will KNOW they pose a threat.

So your idea of letting a future president deal with it is right on. Since Iran signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, that's the time to bomb them back into the stone age. Bombing a few sites right now, while we have 150,000 troops and 100,000 contractors within their striking distance, is only going to get a bunch more US citizens killed in the last stupid war you Chicken Hawks let this administration lie and spin us into.

The Saudi's are supplying arms to the Sunni's in Iraq. Will we be 'bombing' Saudi Arabia? 'If' Iran is supplying Arms to the Shiites, it isn't to kill our troops. It's to assure the Sunni's don't get power again. The Saudi's are supplying Sunni's to assure the Shiites don't have power. What to do? Bring the different outside factions to the table and work it out! Iran offered, and we turned them down. That was WRONG!

Congress voting to go war in Iran is not likely, after three hard years of this war. Hard to get after WMD's failed to be there and all of the new views into managed intelligence. But does the administration need a Congressional resolution on action against Iran, no it does not, not in defence of the troops in the field. From today none of our troops can take a step forward against Iran "from start", and the full build up to force levels and our intentions would be very open in Iraq and obvious to Iran. That Congress can voting against going to war in Iran is almost a given. The real problem comes from actions by the Administration that provoke open conflict. A quick attack against nueclear facilities even a nueclear attack would leave the administration open to impeachment and international trial.

Fars in another comment pointed out that Iraq is in no way a secure back area for forward operation into Iran. I have to ask what ports can give full supply for extended U.S. operations into Iran now today. Will any third international party give the U.S. support for operations into Iran. Will other Sunni nations support or condemn our war against Iran, and if they do give support and ports are we like in Kuwait doing there business one more time and not our own.

According to the article if congress were to pass a resolution that would tell the president that he is not authorized to enter into hostilities with Iran without the express approval of congress, it would head off any attempt by the president to do so.

Lets all sit back and let things handle themselves.

We can invent innovative new ways to "cut and run."

We can let all our enemies, and even future enemies know that the crying starts from within and self destruction soon follows.

Just like Viet Nam, we won every damn battle, except the one at home with the freaks, sympathizers, beatniks and Commie coddlers. Let's stay committed and follow through with past decisions.

The option is to become another France, an overrun, faded once super-power with no bite. A veritable folding lawn chair of a country, subserviant to minority masses who see it only as a pathway to fatter wallets and freedom from seventh century barbarism.

It IS just like Vietnam isn't it. They live there. We don't. Eventually we will leave. We could do it now, with 3165 dead, or when the toll reaches 58,000 like in Nam, or we could stay there generation after generation. It's only cost us $500,000,000,000.00 to stay 4 years.

Eventually, we will HAVE to leave, and then they will sort out their civil war just as Vietnam did.

I am not advocating subserviance to any one. However, unless my life style or pursuit of happiness is being directly endangered, war is not the answer.

Oh, please. Congress has not been following the Constitution for decades----at least seven or eight decades. So why would they start now?
