Some take an oath, we all have an obligation »
Posted by: populist 1 year, 3 months agoBush, Cheney, & Congress have failed to support and defend the Constitution. What can we do? We can ask those in our local governments who have taken the oath, what they are willing to do to support and defend our Constitution. Will they speak out in defense of it, and if not, why not? Perhaps it's time we have that conversation.

So Bush and Cheney took an oath.....and LIED! Omigosh! I can't believe it! Could anyone even imagine such a thing! Thank God they didn't get us into a war under false pretenses, causing thousands of deaths, and make themselves billionaires while bankrupting our country. Now, that would be serious!

If we are we to preserve our public liberty with downright force, can we? Just don't let the government take away our 2nd amendment and the means to do so. The 2nd amendment is about enabeling the people to defend itself against an out of control government, not hunting or the like. It allows us to possess arms and without that we the people will never be a force worth being heard. As Henry said, if we let the government take away the means of the people to be a force, we will be ruined as we will have no means to stop it. The way things seem to be going, we may need to fall back on that concept sooner then later.

You can start by having them respect the interstate commerce clause, which would require them to repeal most gun laws.
If they were following the Constitution, they would lack the authority to do much of what they've done.
And while were at it, let's have them re-read the 1st amendment. it says "CONGRESS shall make no laws respecting the establishment of religion, OR prohibiting free exercise there-of..."
A state courthouse displaying the 10 commandments is NOT a case of CONGRESS making a law establishing a state religion.

Even tho I agree w/you on Iraq, the Dems have done a lot of what they promised. They passed a min wage, they're working on immigration (even tho there's concern at both ends on that), they're trying to improve ethics rules, etc (http://ww...">http://www.house.gov/pelosi/).">(http://ww...
But their caving no Iraq REALLY p!$$es me off.

while they may have done other things, war is the disease that infects everything else in society. James Madison explained this quite well over 200 years ago:
"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few."
"In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people.... [There is also an] inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and ... degeneracy of manners and of morals.... No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare."

Oh, God help us. Rosie is NOT a Democratic mouthpiece. She's a ranting lunatic. Just like the Reps' Rush. The only diff is that Rush has a HUGE following - drugs & infidelity not withstanding.
Hate to tell you this on the 600k figure. It came from the British journal Lancet, which used statistical analysis that's been used for decades for everything from census to genocide figures, etc. It was all over the news for months (http://ww...">http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/ira...
So, even if I don't agree w/a WHOLE lot of what Rosie says, she got that number from a reputable source.

It's pretty clear from your posts that you did not cast a Democratic vote in November, so why are you so upset with them? They didn't deceive you; they are just living up to your expectations. I could undderstand if some of their supporters were a bit annoyed, but you should be celebrating; that would would be more honest.

Its quite interesting that you ewxpect the Democrats to do MORE In 5 months then the GOP has done with control of Congress for 12 years. AND for the last 6 the GOP has had complete control of the govt and they STILL haven't accomplished anything. Where was ALL that hate when the GOP was in power??

Didn't W lie? He KNEW there were no WMD's or links to AQ, yet he told us there were & he invaded Iraq. Isn't that lying?
And I can understand that "Bumper Sticker" comment. Think about it. W's been throwing "War On Terror" around so much that he's turned it into his personal slogan. ANY questioning of his authority & he screams "TERRORISTS!!!!" He's turned it into a battle cry.
YES - 9/11 happened. YES - The Pentagon was attacked. But, instead of going after, capturing, prosecuting & punishing those involved, he screams "WAR ON TERROR" & bombs the hell out of people irregardless of their connections to those attacks. And, if you haven't noticed, W's policies have actually INCREASED terrorist activity around the world.

On Min Wage, try telling the millions that RELY on a min wage that it's pork.
And Immigration. You scream about the Dems doing nothing over the past 4 months, but you forget W had 6 YEARS & the REPS had 12 (yes TWELVE) years and they did NOTHING.
At least some Dems are trying something the Reps haven't for the past 12 years. They're trying to get a BI-PARTISAN bill w/those Reps who deign to talk to them.

he funny part is, the Democrat voters have already forgotten all the promises and or are to dumb to realize they were lied to and taken to the cleaners!>>>>
Nope. Not all democrats have forgotten, not to mention that CONS are busy little bees thwarting everything the democrats try. Nice of you to miss that. A little telling, as well. IMO, they should have told bush boy to get back to them when he was ready to sign the first bill, and then move on to other things, like health care. Plenty of money to bring em home now, so bush couldn't have used the scare tactic of the troops being without their needs.
Anyway, if they tried for 50 years, democrats couldn't match the mess these GD CONS have made of our country.

the govt has to be reformed at the constitutional level. not by politicians. not by lawyers. not by celebrities. not by big corporate dollars. by unions and academics, and teachers, police officers, and firefighters, and soldiers, and bricklayers, and farmers, and authors, and scientists, and bartenders, and journalists, and small business people, and housewives, and citizens of all stripes
it is time for a Constitutional Convention as provided for in article V of the constitution.

Interesting, but in having a ConCon, what would we change in the constitution? Is a convention actually necessary? Or should we simply demand that they follow the current law??
Reply-

truthiness1 year, 3 months ago
there is no actual right to privacy in the constitution...it is an inferred right, which is not how the constitution is supposed to work. in this day of e-media, we need to spell some things out.
every human can be corrupted. its easy to say you wont cheat on your wife when there arent models trying to fck you every day. its also easy to say you wouldnt take a bribe when there arent special interest groups offering you $$$ every day in gray areas of the law. we need term limits, and campaign reforms, and to rid ourselves of special interest and corporate money in politics.
we need a seperate branch for oversight of the other 3. dont ask your accountant to tell you if hes stealing.
we need universal health insurance (not medicine, insurance) a capitalist state needs healthy workers. a republic needs healthy citizens. right now we are paying for 10 different health services to receive one.
go to the link. I lay it all out.

Here are some suggestions.
How about elimination of electoral college? There are better ways of electing a president, even something simple like direct democracy is way better than the electoral college. Or we could use preferential voting or Condorcet method. We could also change the current voting system for Congressional memebrs to proportional representation system, which would result into more political parties, unlike the current system, which according to Duverger's law leads towards strictly a two-party system.
How about repealing War Powers Act?
How about eliminating or completely reforming the lobbying system?
How about establishing a branch that would investigate and punish violations of Constitutional law by members of other branches?
I'm sure once this Constitutional Convention thing is happening I as well as others will be able to come up with many more suggestions. Since I don't expect it to happen in reality, I'll tell you after I see it in my dreams.

I agree that some of the amendments listed in your link should be considered (replacement of the electoral college with popular vote, for example).
But, in my opinion, the biggest problem isn't that our present constitution is inherently flawed; it's that it's being undermined, misinterpreted and just plain ignored. Rewriting or amending it will have little impact if politicians and justices are oblivious to the guidance it provides.

part of the reason for my desire to do this is the fact that they keep ignoring it. if the citizenry were to gather and reinforce it. that would be a indisputable mandate. its one thing to argue about what franklin meant 200 yrs ago. its quite another to try and tell you what you meant last year.

Lets converse about the guilt complex that is attempted by the conservative right to disparage our disagreement with the war by saying we are against our troops.
As a Vietnam vet I look back at the 50,000 American soldiers who perished for what? Nothing accomplished and the fear factor, "the communist will get you", is exactly the same reasoning for Iraq.
No American is against, "Our troops", so this is a non argument and just another ploy of Americas conservative expansionist. Lets use the analogy of the third Reich, the average German soldier was not blamed for an aggressive war by Hitler, some Gestapo and higher ups in the Reich were rightfully condemed and persecuted. Same with Iraq, do not dare use the troop excuse to make your argument sound plausible, its not, its hypocrisy and attempting to persuade the masses with propaganda.
Would I again serve in Vietnam knowing what I know today, absolutely not. I do not hate our soldiers, I hate Bush.

great point. I call those excuses complicity.
Should we not try to prosecute common criminals in our hometowns when it's difficult to catch them? Or, does our moral standard call on us to do what's right?
If we don't impeach, we're simply giving the green light for future presidents to do exactly the same.

We need 60% of Congressional support to impeach, and there is no way we can get that with only having the majority by such a small margin.
I'm all for impeachment too, but i don't see it happening.
Maybe they can bring them up on charges once they are out of office. But right now, i am scared they will use the war president card to stay in office when his term is over.

Articles of impeachment could be created.
But, to actually impeach, a 2/3 majority (forgot which House) is needed.
That will never happen.
The Republicans are so myopic and so corrupted and so greedy and so unwilling to admit that any of them did ANYTHING wrong that they will NEVER vote to impeach anyone in the white house.
My only hope is that we do NOT get yet another Republican in the white house in 2009.

for conviction (removal from office), 2/3 of senate.

"As President, George W. Bush swore an oath to 'preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States'."
This is how the article begins...but it should have been a central theme over the last six years of news cycles because this president done the opposite. The USAPATRIOT Act alone has violated the Bill of Rights...the central part of the freedom expressed in the U.S. Constitution. This administration has been using terrorism as a tool for usurping our rights and we have been allowing for it to happen!
I cannot wait for January 20th, 2009! God help us until then...

Impeach them. Bush and Cheney. I don't care if they don't have a 2/3 majority in the Senate. Start the dang process. As said before, if we don't impeach them, the next president will be doing the same thing. Maybe worse. Have you heard of one candidate for President, either Republican or Democrat, swear that they will pull back on the expanded powers of the Executive Branch to bring it back in line with the Constitution? Not one that I have heard. They hate Bush for the power he's grabbed and now they want a chance at the wheel.
If we do not impeach, the rest of the world sees the citizenry of this nation as stupid, spineless or powerless. Which one do you want to be?

The constitution is perfectly fine the way it is! I agree with populist that people need to stay in tune with this document to insure the powers granted are not abused. That is half of the problem today from children to adults they could not even tell you what rights the constitution gives them. The other half is that nobody bands together to stand up to the elected people of power and say wait a second right there buddy your going to follow the constitution or your out the door. I believe there should be a people's constitution group in every state that is in direct contact with the Federal Government and has access to anything concerning the American people. Then someone can stop the corruptness before it begins. Something along those lines would be good. I am so mad at the current government I could "bear my arms" right now and drive to the Capitol if I knew it would do some good, but just little old me no, now if a millions patriot did?

Open your eyes! Where would you get support for a ConCon? The Democrats had to give the President a $100 billion dollar Military Supplement to get their Increased Minimum Wage passed. The President is the Commander in Chief, and Dirty Harry, and Demascas Rose Pelosi are not. He still has the veto pen until Jan. 20, 09. 37 Democrats voted with Republicans on the Supplementa bill in the Senate. There are not enough leftists in this country to elect a dog catcher in a ghost town.

NO, government servants need to start following its mandates. The founders were enlightened individuals much more intelligent than today's judge or attorney.
Further, the framers and patriots of yesterday knew that if the Constitution and Bill of Rights were to survive, it would be written in plain and simple English.

Do you honestly believe that the Dems will pull out of an area of the world where we are engaged with Islamic Fundamentalist Terrorist. That is the war that we are now fighting in Iraq at this time. Yes, they are creating thier own little 'civil disturbance' and yes, it is being fueled by these terrorist or we would have been out of there. Take off the blinders and accept the plain truth.
Now as far as all of the promises made pre-election..... this is exactly what many of us expected out of this Congress. It is a tough world and they are not willing to fight for the existance of our USA. They are willing to sit on thier arses and point fingers and play the 'blame game'. Exactly what was expected out of Pelosi & Gang. Now just throw in one of these caracters for a 4 year team at President and the next election will be a Republican landslide.
What a joke.....

I found that, if you wanna be on the #1 of the Netscape front page, all you have to do is to write any article that criticize Bush and his administration, or praise him as a heroic leader on the war of terror (actually this term doesn't make sense to me), or take no stand on this issue and just paint an image of american patriotism by "morally" supporting the troops. All at a sudden, we have all kinds of "experts" talking about politics that satisfy everyone's appetite, whether you love or hate what they say.

I think it is about time we start acting like Americans and stop bickering over Republican versus Democrat. The real question is what do the parties in general stand for. I for one believe in the constitution. I believe it was designed to protect us throughout time from the stupid, the controlling and the dictators. The most dangerous are Republicans. They promote discrimination more then any other group. I relate them to fascism, but this is extreme. They reduce federal funding for domestic needs and an increase in military. The democrats have made poor decisions too, but for me they are democratic and support freedom and constitution. Republicans want to select parts of the constitution to support (2nd amend.) while abandoning others (1st and 14th amend.). The democrats handled the war-funding poorly, but without compromise government funding to support things like social security, FDA, and present research programs would be seriously affected. They will have their chance again.
