After the supreme court ruled that the federal govt has a right to interfere with states rights and go into states where medical marijuana is legal to prosecute dying patients for using their legal medicine, congress attempted to put a stop to it last year with the bipartison Hinchley-Rorbacher amendment. The bill was defeated by the republican controlled congress,so much for "compassion".
The bill has been reintroduced in the new congress and the only thing blocking it's passage is republican congressmen who fear being labeled as "soft on drugs".
Write your congressmen and tell them that if they show compassion for seriously ill people...you won't hold it against them.

Good to see some intelligent open minded people in this world 444. My brother in law was one of the best men I will ever meet. We lost him 5 years ago to cancer. It was really sad watching the Kimo and cancer eat away at his body, I can easily say this was the toughest and the saddest thing I have ever been through. All in all his meds did squat for his pain and his appatite. A friend who battled cancer before and won informed us of the bennefits of cannabis, "marijuana". Marijuana, and it alone eased the pain Ian was going through, it also helped with his appatite. People I'm not saying legalize pot for wreckless teenagers to wreck their life over, but lets at least use it to the greater good of humanity. I can honestly say that for once I thanked god for marijuana, and I would willingly die myself for this change, because I have seen the benefits of this drug firsthand.

My sympathies to you and your family. I understand becuase my mother has a condition that could lead to cancer. She stopped taking Procrit because it was believed to lead to cancer. It gave her so much energy and now her body is weak and she's in constant pain, not to mentionthe fibromyaglia she has. Marijuana would help her so much: relieve the pain, increase her appetite and help her relax. It amazes me the so called fear these politicans have about being soft on drugs if marijuana, medical or not, is legalized. Think of the lives it would help and the crime that would be prevent and not to mention the small time dealers that would be out of business. Legalize it, tax it. People who are going to use it will use it.
Those who need it and are afraid of being arrest must continue to suffer at the hands of our political leaders. Further, a friend of mine is studying nursing and learned there's nothing to prove the government's claims against it.

I'm in favor, but until there is a different president, it will most likely be vetoed.

Hi walden
The "uncompassionate ones" are out of step with the public.Polls over the last 10 years have shown a consistent 80% of Americans favor legal medical marijuana .
I hope everyone on here writes their congressmen,we all know how the squeaky wheel gets the oil...we can do it too!

Marijuana is a natural plant, a weed actually, that grows in almost any climate. How can government outlaw nature? It defies belief. Unlike cocaine, marijuana is not processed in any way, it is smoke in its natural form. Marijuana has been used for medicine and spiritual practices for thousands of years. How can government outlaw spiritual practices? It defies the constitution.
Hemp makes very strong rope, sturdy and soft fabrics, grows on arid and sandy soil. How can government outlaw agriculture? There is no precedent in history.
Hemp seed oil can be used to lubricate machinery, light lamps, produce fuel for engines. How can government outlaw light? Only if they prefer us to remain in darkness.
End prohibition now!

Not only that but the more important point is that republicans claim to be the party that believes in the govt not intruding on individual liberties and states rights to determine their own laws, yet these fake republicans continue to show their hypocracy every time a bill like this is introduced. There is only one real republican running for president...Ron Paul.

The derivitives of poppy are commonly prescribed and used in hospitals and homes all over the nation, LEGALLY.

So what we need to realize is that marijuana should not be legal for everyone to smoke at their leisure but should be legal for those medical patients who need it. Where the argument for legalizing marijuana runs into trouble is when people claim that it should be regulated no more than piece of fruit.

These "controlled dangerous substances" also were used for thousands of years, and there was never a "drug problem" in america until they were deemed "dangerous".
Nobody ever stole for their cheap, legal drugs until the government decided to control them.
The only problems stemming from addiction were created by the government, like the civil war, for instance.
Codeine is a better cough suppressant than what you can buy over the counter.
Also, part of the reason why these people want marijuana for pain tis the reluctance to let doctors manage pain without getting hassled by the government for writing too many prescriptions.
And NOT ONE PERSON has EVER died from an overdose of marijuana. In 1988, administrative law judge Francis Young, of the DEA, called marijuana one of the safest therapeutic substances ever known.

First, he's right. Nobody has ever died directly from using marijuana. Second, marijuana does NOT contain nicotine. Potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and gr. peppers do though. The levels of tar are much lower than with tobacco. People will smoke upwards of a pack of cigarettes a day. Not many people smoke 20 -25 joints a day.
