On April 24, 2003, a board member of Chiquita International Brands disclosed to a top official at the Justice Department that the king of the banana trade was evidently breaking the nation's anti-terrorism laws. Chertoff, then assistant attorney general affirmed that the payments were illegal but said to wait for more feedback.

Amazing, but not surprising. Americans have always had to deal with some situations on the ground that may be in violation of US law.

What surprises me is that Chertoff never got back to the Chiquita executives...on the other hand, what could they have done? Send in the Special Forces?

Gee, Americans shouldn't have to sacrifice BANANAS for the sake of security, but they should sacrifice their civil rights?

Oh, I know, it is CORPORATE PROFITS that can't be sacrificed.

Any real sense of national security does not appear to be a priority for this administration. Pathetic.

WE are supporting terrorists in South Iran. We are using their own weapons against them. I guess being s State-sponsor of terror can be a convenient thing.

They do this ensure the US public will buy into their scare tactics to keep themselves in power just as Hitler did.

It's amazing that this was allowed to go on. However as DR pointed out, What could they have done???

What irritates me is that Liberals are constantly being accused of supporting the terrorists, then things like this comes out, the conservatives ignore it, and cry foul.

Sometimes I think the system is so rotten that there is just no longer any point in trying to pretend that things may get better. Perhaps I should climb into a cave and meditate for the next two years.

The fabric of our nation is so moth eaten at this point that I wonder if it can ever be salvaged.

Thanks for the story. It really cheered me up. (Not)

You might want to go home, but you'll need some "protection" if you want to get there alive, and find your family alive.

You think you have cancer so you go to the doctor - the doctor says " I'll get back to you" so not really wanting to know the answer you just sit & wait - four years later you're terminal & the doctor is playing golf - sounds like the same scenario .

Justice Department : Chiquita's payments were not aiding an obvious terrorism threat such as al-Qaeda; instead, the cash was going to a violent South American group helping a major U.S. company maintain a stabilizing presence in Colombia.

its phrases like this that show how shameful the US Govt is.

the AUC is a right-wing military group who has terrorized the locals for years as an enforcement arm of the corporations...

                          FARC which classified as left-wing,

                          whose members are the locals...

yet, chiquita claims auc was protecting chiquitas workers.

                          THE LOCALS ARE THE WORKERS!

geez, this report has slipped in enough spin so that some readers have commented: "what could they have done?

CHIQUITA COULD PAY A REASONABLE PRICE FOR THE BANANAS TO THE WORKERS---

why would the local people, who, for generations have only known bananas, need a para-military group like the farc?

they can grow bananas and sell them.

chiquita and dole pineapple have been terrorizing those people for generations.

Wasn't Chiquita also involved in troubles in some other south american contries, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua? We don't need this crap. Bananas grow in many places, why should people be killed for bananas? That's bananas!

Does Oliver North work for Chiquita now? This sounds like the Iran-Contra affair. There it was proffits from an arms sale to Iran that was used to prop up a violent right-wing Central American regime.

Doesn't surprize me in the least. The Bush administration has given no-bid contacts to their cronies and business friends since grabbing the presidency. And almost every policy ruling has been in the favor of big business to the detriment of the American people. And the way the DOJ is screwed up, I doubt this will go too far with maybe some fines and a slap on the wrist.

Chertoff in his high paying job and perks is doing what our white collar crooks in power have been doing for years, "Meddling" in another countries interest to make money. The kicker, they supplied arms to this group on the terrorist list. They should go to jail, they will not, they are above the law. Chertoff is a true slug on society as are most Bush appointees.

The manipulation and invasion of foreign countries in support of corporate U.S.A. has been going on since McKinley (Spanish American War - A.K.A. land grab for Cuba, Philipines etc.) at least, and arguably since Andrew Jackson (moving Native Americans for acquire land for development, primarily by Jackson's close friends).

I'm sorry but the only thing going through my mind when I read this story was the old Monty Python skit where John Cleese was training army recruits how to defend themselves against a madman armed with a banana.

"First you shot him. Then you eat the banana, thus disarming him."

Bush is the type of President that Tom Clancy portrayed in "Clear and Present Danger"...the one who never says anything clearly and who blames everyone else rather than take responsibility. All the covert and hidden agendas and tacitly approved criminal activity that is just the result of everything being "complex". All Bushites do is avoid taking responsiblity.
