The Republican Party, known since the late 19th century as the party of business, is losing its lock on that title. New evidence suggests a potentially historic shift in the Party's identity -- what strategists call its "brand." The votes of many disgruntled conservatives and other lapsed Republicans are now up for grabs.

Gotta be one of the more detailed and well researched articles ive seen from the WSJ in a pretty long while. They really did a good job with this.

I'll say this. Almost everyone I know in the hedge fund community is donating heavily to and supporting Democratic candidates.

Interesting that the Democrats have been favored as the party that would do the better job reducing the federal deficit since 2001.

But then again, it's a Wall Street Journal poll, so clearly just more propaganda from the liberal media--right? ;-)

Democrats always have been better at balancing the national budget, republicans spend and democrats clean up their mess. That's the way it's been for 20 of the last 28 years.

I'm convinced that a socially liberal, fiscally conservative path is what 'The Middle' is all about. The party that can stake out this path is a sure winner.

Liberalism is good for business. See, conservatism means, by definition, maintaining the status quo. Innovation doesn't happen that way and innovation is what makes American business great.

It's no wonder many businesses are starting to support Democrats.

Just yesterday, I heard about the religious right-wing followers of James Dobson and Focus on the Family will support a 3rd party conservative if Rudy Giuliani becomes the GOP nominee.

Good. And I'm not fan of Giuliani and his warmonger tendencies. But IMO, the religious nutjobs, along with the neo-con warmongers and laissez-faire capitalists, have destroyed a once viable political party.

            Good riddance!

Yes. Curious, isn't it? 52% Republican contributions of active duty military personnel have gone to Paul.

And I'm sure the GOP has rigged the primary system to prevent a Paul upset... but - hypothetically - let's assume that Ron Paul DOES upset the apple cart manages to snag the Republican nomination:

If Hillary Clinton grabs the Democratic nomination, then I would like vote for Paul.

                (....more...)

Don't misunderstand me...I admire and respect Paul for his adherence to the U.S. Constitution and his unwavering position on the war, but unfortunately, his I also believe that his Libertarian tendencies would also push for even further business deregulation and he would try to take us another step toward a complete laissez-faire business climate. And an even wider gap between rich and poor.

Still, on balance, with even greater Democratic majorities to blunt those tendencies, I would still vote for Paul as legitimate vote for a lesser of two evils...

If it's Rudy Giuliani and Hillary, I'll vote for Mike Bloomberg or Ralph Nader.

Finally a sign of sanity coming from the right.

The past 6 years of Republican rule has seen larger governement, irresponsible spending, falling dollar and large increases in the cost of health care (bad for small business).

I own a small business, and I can tell you that running up 10 trillion dollars in debt isn't good for business or workers. It isn't good for retirees, and it's especially bad for kids. Most of the payments will fall to them.

Interest payments alone now run close to 500 billion dollars a YEAR!
