Bar low for Thompson as debate looms

Politics – All he has to do is not fall asleep. All he has to do is not throw up. All he has to do is not drool. Has there ever been a major presidential candidate with lower expectations on the eve of his first debate than Fred Thompson?

Fred Thompson is not the first Republican the Democrats have "Misunderestimated" What do you expect? You know his record. He has a Conservative voting rating of 86%. He won his last election for the Senate by 67%. He isn't running like the rest of the Candidates. No he is not, and because he is not he will win the Nomination, and the General election without even trying. These forums, where they all stand around is really silly. They are not debates. I am amused that Republicans are not afraid of Chrissy Matthews, and Democrats shiver in their boots at the thought of appearing before Bret Hume. Anyway the gathering this afternoon should be interesting.

Taking your points in order:

1. Conservatism is no guarantee of electoral success, even in America. The USA is, hardly, the shining beacon of religious fundamentalism, after all.

2. Given the friendly media the GOP enjoys access to, it would be hard for Thompson to look BAD. Good grief, they can make even Bush Jr. look good sometimes (but not even they can make him look good all the time).

3. "These forums, where they all stand around is really silly." - That's called telling the truth, unlike adopting a platform full of vague slogans and then twisting them around to mean the opposite after getting in. Sure, they might lie, but at least people can point to a record and say" President X lied!"

4. "Democrats shiver in their boots"? Not likely. Any Dem hopeful would LOVE to engage a 3rd-rater like Thompson in a no-holds barred verbal duel. Even I'd slice and dice him within 5 minutes, and I'm not even American.

5. Let's face it - if you're campaiging in Fla., and you don't know about the Everglades oil-drilling proposals or the Terry Schiavo case, then you don't know what you're on about. And if you don't know what you're on about, then you shouldn't be in the running at all.

6. (sorry for having it out of order) "Misunderestimated" is a Bushism and has nothing to do with Democrats.

Finally, off my own bat, I have noticed that, all too often, both parties (but especially the Repubs at the moment) associate power with corruption. Also, quite frankly, I think that Americans have had enough of leaders that embarrass them - they don't need another Bush.

Hypothetical UN Summit:

Aussie Ambassador: "Who's that sleeping in the chair over there?"

French Ambassador: "Oh, him? That's 'Old Dozy', the latest President of the United States."

A.A.: "Damn, but they've got a shallow talent pool now, don't they?"

F.A.: "Oui."

What is there to worry about? I'm sure he'll stay awake. With his sex appeal, and impressive presidential presence he is sure to dominate. Throw in a few of those home spun sayings of his, and it's a slam dunk.

ROFL!!

I disagree. I think the bar is high for Thompson. He is afterall, the standard bearer for the conservative cause. As such there is great weight on his shoulders. Finishing behind Rudy or Romney is not an option.

avatar
Reply

Don't you worry about ol Fred. He is more Presidential then the other 17 candidates, and he hasn't begun to run. He does well with those he meets face to face, and he will make Hillary look like a wanna be. The Democrats are upset because he is acting like he already has the nomination won.

If old country boy Fred (who wears Gucci loafers to county fairs) comes across like he has at his campaign stops it's good bye Fred.

I doubt that Thompson will inspire many, either.

What America needs is a less......divisive candidate. And don't tell me that Giuliani is that candidate - he's not.

avatar
avatar
Reply

The reason for that is because the wind is always blowing his stink somewhere else.

avatar

You mean like Thompson does? Also, refusal to listen to the people is not necessarily a virtue. Sometimes, it's contempt and/or stubbornness that is responsible.

In my opinion winning a debate on television amounts to nothing more than saying what all your supporters want to hear..People will say Rudy won..people will say Romney won..people may actually say Paul won...only because those people said things the THEY wanted to hear...then just keep hitting redial on your phone to pad the results.

avatar
Reply

We all heard Hannity telling the sheep that the reason Ron Paul won every debate is because RP supporters spammed the polls. Well newsflash buddy...YOU CAN'T VOTE MORE THAN ONCE!!!

avatar
Reply

I disagree. Nationally televised debates are a chance for candidates to showcase their abilities, and present an image of competence and leadership.

Richard Nixon, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford could all attest to that.

If Thompson is the one, people will be able to see it tonight.

Or in about an hour! :D

The problem is all the people see or hear are short clips of rehearsed information and posture..there is no one on one...no interaction between the candidates...

I only have one question for Mr. Thompson. What will you do with the neocons when they come knocking at your door? Apparently Giuliani is already sucking up and welcoming these leeches aboard his ship. Are the American people really dumb enough to keep these people near the wheels of power?

Sheee-it is that all I needs to to be prezident? I can sit there and look stupid too.

And maybe have them Nascar fellers like me too, least wise cording to Zach Wamp from Tennessee.

And hot-damn maybe gets myself on Tee-Vee too! Wahoo!

Yet again i will say, I don't think Thompson is really serious about his bid for the nomination. He doesn't seem motivated to me, maybe it's because the republicans know they probably don't stand a prayer this election and are scared to try rigging Diebold again.

Poor Ol Fred, he becomes Nixons mole on the Watergate investigating committee and Nixon shows his appreciation by calling him 'dumb as hell'.

avatar
Reply

"Oh sh--, he's dumb as hell. Fred Thompson," Nixon interjects. "Who is he? He won't say anything."

In another conversation some weeks later, Nixon and his advisers were still describing Thompson as not very smart but at least beginning to play ball.

"Our approach is now, we've got a pretty good rapport with Fred Thompson. He came through fine for us this morning," White House counsel Fred Buzhardt says on a tape from June 6.

"He isn't very smart, is he?" Nixon asks.

"Not extremely so, but --," Buzhardt says, interrupted by the president.

"But he's friendly," Nixon says.

"But he's, he's friendly," Buzhardt echoes.

"Good."

Any one of those top tier Republicans can beat Hillary Clinton. There is an article this morning about how suprised some people are that Hillary is so likable. Here's a clue, if you have to make up stories about how likable Hillary is, she isn't. The Democrats know she is not liked, she is cold, and ruthless. She has to force herself to laugh, then laughs in all the wrong places. Or is that a cackle? I cannot wait until after the Primaries when the debates are debates, between 2 people. So, if Ron Paul is winning all the alleged debates why is he still polling in single digits?

avatar
Reply

Because he is a Libertarian running on the Republican ticket to broadcast his campaign.

His ideals, the true conservative ideals, scare the hell out of the Republicans because he vocalizes them rather than obfuscating them like Dumby et al. Republicans dont want to live by their ideology, they just want to be right in their own minds.

He scares Democrats because he opposes nearly all of their concepts of governmental management of traditionally privitized entities.

He represents REAL CHANGE and that scares people to the point of marginalizing his philosophy as 'radical' and 'pointy headed'.

People are afraid of change; very simple, ani.

If your having trouble sleeping...play a Thompson debate rerun...it works better than valium or sleeping aids. :)

The 1st thing the next President should do after taking office is to exclude bad actors whose annual income exceeds one million dollars a year from receiving any Social Security. These actors should be relegated to a gulag somewhere in Uzbekistan where they are forced to learn how to read and write, and how to grasp the lines their handlers force them to pronounce. Senator Thompson should be the first relegated to this group.

What I admire most about Thompson is the high quality level of his hypocrisy. What THE NEW YORK TIMES unearthed about him is prima facie evidence of why he should forever be barred from any public trust: his informing the Nixon White House during Watergate about what the Ervin Committee was doing -- when he was working for Sen. Baker -- is unconscionable.

Senator Thompson, what a delight you are to behold in a field of lackluster candidates. You are the epitome of what a bumbling, three faced, B-movie level politician should be.

avatar
Reply

A little hyperbolic, isn't that? I don't respect, like or trust the man myself, but that seems to be going a little far. Hold on, I've just done a little research.

In the Watergate hearings, Thompson was the minority counsel to the Senate committee. He has since admitted to passing Noxin's lawyer confidential information, despite not being instructed to by the committee.

Later, in a case against Governor Ray Blanton (D-Fla.), Thompson successfully prosecuted a wrongful dismissal case that eventually wound up with the Governor impeached.

Wow, it seems that he was a fierce anti-corruptionist - unless the corrupt people were Republicans. That this man can run for any public office, let alone the Presidency, is an insult to the United States. May the God of your choice help America if Thompson becomes President, for Thompson certainly won't.

Before anyone attacks the facts that I brought to the party, remember: He has admitted to most of them. The others are public record.

Here's the first report in:

DEARBORN, Michigan (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson made a crisp debut in his first 2008 debate appearance on Tuesday, and rivals Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney battled over their records on taxes and spending.

Thompson, who did not participate in two debates held since he entered the race last month, said the U.S. economy was not headed for a recession and warned against strict trade restrictions on China during the session with his eight Republican rivals.

"I've enjoyed watching these fellows," Thompson said after avoiding verbal missteps that have plagued his month-old candidacy. "I've got to admit it was getting a little boring without me."

Wasn't Fred great, AG? I cannot watch an entire Democrat discussion group, but I enjoyed todays gathering. I liked what Sen Thompson, and Mayor Giuliani had to say. Sen McCain held his own, but I think Gov Romney is trying too hard. Ron Paul reminds me of the mad monk.

lol, Ron Paul reminded me of a rabid dog.

Yes, the debate was very good. I was very proud of all of them. They made me proud to be a Republican. They all seemed to have good camaraderie with each other.

Watching the debates right now, Thompson is just repeating more of what we have listened to from Bush for the last 7 years.

Unlike the Democrats, Republicans don't JUMP over a bar....They just shimmy under it as in doing the Limbaugh Rock!

Aidenag must really be scared by Thompson's candidacy, since he posts such unsubstantial personal attacks. It is typical of the loony left that they refuse to wait until the guy screws up before they invent phony dialogue to discredit him. Of course, it's also typical of the loony right.

I'm in favor of looking at reality rather than fiction. I suppose that makes me Aidenag's mortal enemy. But I really don't think that we should allow the loons to choose our next president.

Having watched the debate, I've come to the conclusion that Republican candidates for President and the people who vote for them have no grasp of economics, at all. God help us.
