Those were Americans dying to defend the Conderate flag. Leave it alone. We are tired of this PC BS, You cannot change the past. Americans can do, and say, and fly whatever flag they want to fly. You don't want to fly the Rebel flag, then don't, but leave the rest of us alone.

aniokly - take your rebel flag & shove it - the Confederates were traitors who took arms against the Federal Govt. The total losses of the Civil War were more than all the other wars we've had combined.
Would you think the same about flying a Nazi flag --- hmmmm maybe you would

Rev. Al - what a joke hasn't passed an opportunity to stir the racial pot for his own ends. - Cheney & Sharpton going hunting together great idea! Almost as good as Hamilton & Burr. Either way we come out at least 50% better off

Hey aceofdumbasses,
Since you hate America so much (don't deny it - I've seen your past posts), why don't you take the AMERICAN flag and shove it? You seem to think that America is a murderer, an aggressor, has led the world into war and that we're responsible for thousands of innocent Iraqi deaths. So by your logic, the American flag ought to be far up your goosebutt by now.
Quack Quack, bird brain.

Ace, old Son, opinions differ as to the commonly displayed Confederate battle flag. Many regard it as a symbol of proud patriotism and rejection of all comsuming federalism. Only the federal govt. (and not nearly everyone they represented) regarded the Confederacy to be in rebellion. The states seceeded based in every case on plebescite--you know--the will of the majority of the voters? Without invasion by the Federal troops of a seperate sovereign nation there would have been no war and no loss of life.
Oh, and as to the story, there's not a nickle's worth of difference between fascist imperialist Cheney and loud-mouthed bigot Sharpton. Lock them in a windowless room together and shoot whoever emerges.

It is illegal for him to order the torture of anyone. Everybody throws that term around without knowing the legal definition. "To cause severe pain or inflict permanent damage."
Causing fear and discomfort is not torture. Water boarding is not torture. It causes mild discomfort and a lot of fear.
He also can't order the death of anyone. Do you live in an alternate universe?

Waterboarding and temperature reduction can either one cause permanent injury and death, Endo, especially when applied repeatedly. Do you think for one instant that legality is a serious concern of the menbers of the present administration, or constitutionality? Do YOU live in an alternate universe?

i don't like cheney, i think he's a dangerous man.
but...
i doubt he had anything to do with the hanging of the flag. and being in a garage, i doubt the owners of the club, had anything to do with it either.
it was probably, to be used instead of a curtain. it's a stinkin' hunt camp.

The Confederacy is part of American history and a large rich and proud part. The civil war was about more than just slavery, but once again the special interest groups use anything and everything to drum up support for their cause. I put to you was the treatment of the blacks that much better under the flag of the other side of the civil war? We all know racism still exists to this day in many forms. Blacks were still beaten, hanged, and displaced at the whim of the whites after the fall of the Confederacy, so are you not to fly the current standard?

Lynching was a phenomenon of Reconstruction, not of the Confederacy. The plantation owners of the South may have been slave owners, but the Yankee traders of New England were the ones running, and profiting from, the triangle trade - in rum, molasses, and slaves.
The Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in the Confederacy (not technically within Lincoln's jujridiction at the time), not those outside it.
Reply-

tkyrchncs11 months, 2 weeks ago
Depending on the technical view, it freed no one. The President had no authority to deprive any citizen of his property without due process, and the "citizens" so deprived considreed themselves citizens of a different nation entirely, over whom he had no authority whatsoever.

I totally agree with you. I was born in South Bend. I remember in the 50's a restaurant served a black man. The restaurant died shortly thereafter because the whites boycotted the place. During the court ordered busing there were a lot of protesters in the south. Everyone stayed away from the children. In Boston there was an attempt to overturn a loaded bus. The South was out in the open but the North hid it away until it bursts out.

We weren't much better, look up Africville in Halifax Nova Scotia. A black community the white developers took a liking to and just kicked them out to make a profit. The sad part is they still do that today, the deciding factor today may not be race but it still happens.

Abe Linc, didn't like black people all that much anyway, and I am sure he wouldn't initiate a war that killed all those white boys on my father's ancestor's behalf

You and many others LOVE to shoot the messenger! Rev. Sharpton did not seek out the press to comment about the flag; they sought HIM! He has as much right to express himself as any other American, whether anybody else likes it or not! He wouldn't have known about the flag if the reporter had not COME TO HIM and ASKED FOR HIS OPINION, so stop knocking him for exercising his constitutional right to free speech. His reaction to that flag is the same as many other U.S. citizens. You talk as if he invented the objection to that obscenity that is the confederate symbol of all that's wrong with this country. You'll notice I didn't use past tense because you demonstrate the same mindset that your forefathers did! They engaged in the most heinous, disgusting system of deprivation, degradation, humiliation, annihilation and desecration of fellow human beings in the history of the world. And you have the unmitigated GALL to blame the victims for protesting it in outrage.

Take a picture of a Confederate flag, show it to Al Sharpton, tell him Cheney, Bush or anyone on the right and watch the fireworks fly.

You, Sir, are misinformed.
I come from a long line of abolitionists so get off your high horse. Stop reacting and think. The mindset I was commenting on was the "find something bad even if you have to stretch it" news media.
AlSharpton is a willing pawn in the desperate need for bad news. He can say whatever he wants, as I can.
Just try to be a little more informed before you spout inanities.

If you are southerner and you had ancestors in the War of Northern Aggression the flag is a symbol of those ancestors and a symbol of a southerners love for his home. Southerners are a proud bunch and asking them to give up this symbol is cruel and antagonizing. They lost the war but they do remain proud. When a southern looks at that flag they don't think of cross burning or lynchings so I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder or the rabble rouser, like Al Sharpton.
BTW, the flag that most think is the flag of the Confederacy is actually the Alabama Battle Flag. The Confederate flag was blue, hence, the "Bonnie Blue Flag."

The confederate flag is also known as the "rebel" flag because the south was rebelling against the controls the north were trying to place on them. When someone gets a tattoo of the confederate flag, 99.9% of the time it' is because they want to show their opposition to being controlled. Same way with bumper stickers and T-shirts. Usually does not have anything to do with racist actions or thoughts. An SS or swastika on the other hand would be about racism.

Wolfie - you're take on the Confederate flag is a little off - The flag known as the Bonnie Blue Flag was a lone star on a blue field first flown over the Mss. Capitol. It was given it's name by an Irish actor who wrote the song "my Bonnie Blue Flag" - very popular - The flag with the crossed stars & bars was origionally the Confederate naval standard - It was adopted as the battle flag to differentiate it from the Conferate version of the Stars & Bars which was simular to the American flag. The Blue Flag was NEVER adopted as the official Confederate flag. Try looking up some flag info - readily available

Talk about playing to your base.

It does seem like Al and Jesse have taken it upon themselves to keep racial intolerance alive and well. Of ALL the successful black people that I know or are aware of, only these two trigger a racial response in my mind. They are always against something.
Sad.

Seriously, was the photographer named Ivan P. Pavlov?
Because this sounds like a classic "conditional reflexes" experiment.
Take a picture of a Confederate flag, show it to Al Sharpton, tell him Cheney, Bush or anyone on the right and watch the fireworks fly.
"The photo was shown to New York City civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton, who issued a statement demanding that the vice president "leave immediately, denounce the club and apologize for going to a club that represents lynching, hate and murder to black people."
"conditional reflexes" AKA "Pavlov's dog"
Just asking

The article says that a photog took a picture of a flag hanging in a small garage..it does not say where the garage was or if Cheney even knew the flag was there.

Good luck with that. And at the top of the page, no less. I'm starting to seriously think the "anchors" are more than slightly retarded. The only thing about this that's NEWS is the fact that someone thought it was NEWS. Jesus Herpes Christ - there's GOT to be a limit to bleating about Political Correctness doesn't there? Please? Can't we make it legal to just shoot the people who still think tacking a small confederate flag up in a GARAGE is something worth notice? Please? It was probably put up there by someone who watched The Dukes of Hazzard and thought it was "cool" without knowing anything about the civil war or it's (popularly supposed) causes. I KNOW there's more important stuff going on. A LOT more important - like maybe someone in Alabama painted the walls of their trailer or something. /end rant

Can you possibly imagine how Cheney feels, knowing he is probably the most despised man in America?
If there is an afterlife, a God would have a special place to put this cowardly gentleman into, Bush types included.
Who would want this hatred, I surmise only a Cheney conservative hawk who also avoided war while condoning it.

Actually the displaying of the flag reminds those who are still familiar with history. Is for the reminder of who and what the carpet baggers are. The Carpet Bagging that went on after the war was a pretty horrible time for southerners.
The Flag was used sometimes as the safe haven for meetings. It was displayed and that meant a meeting was going to take place there. It later was obused with extremists who did lynchings.
As ignorant as most of you are. Are you not aware that there were blacks who fought for the south? It has been documented and even shown on the History Channel. Even though this flag has been used for racial hatered. It was not intended for that use. It was for the opressive gov't at the time.
