It is commonly believed in Europe that anyone would be more competent that George W. Bush when it comes to foreign policy. But with Clinton tough on Iran and most of the Republicans willing to follow Bush off the foreign policy cliff, that could be a pipe dream.

I'm fascinated that Obama would personally take part in negotiations with Iran. Studying his history, he has shown quite an ability to calmly take charge of situations, disarming both sides of a debate. I agree that going into negotiations unconditionally is the best way to begin.

Right now he is nosing into the Rebel war in Kenya. That won't work either. He thinks visiting his Grandmothers hut in Kenya gives him foreign policy experience.

      FTA:

John C. Hulsman writes, "Perhaps it is time to remind the country that in the old days, American voters put genuine intellectuals such as Adams, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt into the White House. They did so for a reason."

Herein lies the rub: We have traded in genuine intellectuals for the best dressed, the best looking, the cleverest sound-bites, and the best writers. The intellectual isn't "cool" enough to get the vote of this American Idol society.

Anti-intellectualism has been mainstream in this country since at least the days of McCarthyism and the Eisenhower vs. Stevenson presidential races, when "eggheads" were painted as dangerous Communist subversives.

It's stronger than ever today, now that media continually celebrates stupidity--creating fame from the idiotic acts of people known only for being rich and acting outrageous.

You are pointing out the real problem for voters of either

party. The attention to photo-ops, catchy sound bites and

above all - demeanor trumps all!

If Fred Thompson had taken his Geritol - the Republicans

were ready give it all to him. I had told my husband to

watch for "Reaganesque" - it would be coming. We actually

heard some talking head use the term once but surprisingly

to lots of people - 'Ol Fred was trudging not striding and

the enthusiasm faded. They didn't know what he stood for -

he was a Republican; had a voice they could relate to and

looked the part! Hell of a reason to choose the leader of the free world - eh?

I remember Paul Krugman advanced the idea that we were

in desperate need of an egghead right now - I don't think

he could have been more correct. Too bad so many are

"channel surfing" for the right look.

Spiegel has gone downhill in recent years. Now they do no better than an American offering trivial observations about US politics?

Spiegel got its reputation by investigative journalism of things like corruption in the German Defense Dept. If they really wanted to keep up that tradition with respect to America, they would be investigating this:

US Officials who sold nuclear secrets named

News รข;; The former FBI translator has named all the individuals who -- she says -- played a role in the convoluted tale of treasonous activity that she uncovered while working for the Bureau. As added value, I'm including a few biographical details. (Larisa Alexandrovna offers her own list here.)

I found a story in my inbox this morning due to my Google

              alert for "Israeli arms sales".

              http://www.dailyscare.com/2770/the-bomb-in-the-...

It's a good sized piece but goes clear back to the BCCI

scandal! I read "The Crimes of Patriots - A True Tale of

Dope,Dirty Money, and the CIA" by Jonathan Kwitny

years ago on that same topic. It was shocking and I would

still reccommend it or his other book, "Endless Enemies -

the Making of An Unfriendly World". Kwitny,a Wall Street

Journal reporter for 16 years and highly respected, is sadly

no longer with us but the same cast of bad guys are still

apparently playing the game - Amazing!

No, that's not why he visits Kenya. He has ties there. He concerns himself with those who are in trouble there, just like he concerned himself with the poor in Chicago, & gave up the big bucks to work with them on improving their situation. There is no candidate with the negotiation skills of Obama. He proved that when a young man, as President of the Harvard Law Review. I'm sure you know nothing about the Law Review, so this link might help. This man is no slouch, and he isn't stupid, and he has more experience with negotiation than any other candidate. He has LIVED his life negotiating, and done very well.

I am not ashamed to admit (though maybe I should be?)

that I no nothing about the Law Review.

Many thanks for the link. After I've read it I may

have questions - I'll get back to you later.

"As always, Obama's rhetoric is intriguing, but his ideas have yet to be fully formed"

Well that's what we could call an understatement.

I must admit when I saw the title of the story my immediate thought was "I didn't know Obama actually had a policy position - foreign or otherwise."

What is a fully formed foreign policy? "Stay the course" or "Invade Iran"? A whole lot of thinking has gone into a policy like that. LOL!
