Eveybody needs a hero. America, as a whole, needs a hero BADLY right now. Obama has the makings of a true hero (imho) and he has my vote. It's been a long, long, LONG time since I've believed this strongly in a political figure. Does he walk on water? Heck, no! Yet I do believe he is our biggest, brightest hope. I do believe he speaks truth - something we haven't heard in so long that, sadly, many of us can no longer recognize. BUT, as has been said in the past: Truth crushed to earth WILL rise again!

cushi, you already said it all. Obama is refreshing with hope and "honesty" sorely needed by we Americans.

My concern is what another blogger stated, Obama would never win the South. Hopefully that is now a passe argument and we have evolved to the next level. Obama's one main point is that the men in black race must take responsibility by rearing their children properly by providing a sorely needed family environment. That is the one point that blacks need addressing but it has absolutely nothing to do with Barrack Obama himself.

Must add, Hillary the Empress of special interest money continues to use the word "Change" in her ads. The women has been in Washington D.C. forever yet she says she is for "Change", give me a break. She is a corrupt existing politico.

Hope is something we now all seek, lets truly "Change" D.C.

Guys, how do you support this guy? I searched for his voting records. Currently he's voted present more times than taking a side on anything. He's the original invisible man on almost every issue that matters. I don't like Clinton and I'm not impressed with the GOP ticket as it shapes up today but Obama reminds me of the old Daily machine out of Chicago. I don't trust someone who takes a stand on nothing and says even less.

If you don't know what Obama stands for, you haven't been listening to the debates OR reading information readily available to you via, among other things, the internet! Please take some time to inform yourself to prevent making such an ignorant comments.

BB64, strategies are different from one state to another and distinct from Washington D.C. Hopefully you have or are watching the Dem. debate. Best Debate by far and makes any Republican non debate look quite silly and uninformative.

in illinois if u generally like the bill u vote present,go back work out the details then pass it

obama was successful in passing ethics reform at the state level and the national level

in illinois he was successful in passing that legislation that gives every child health care and we have predatory lending laws that r tougher than most and we had the courage to revamp our death penalty

i have watched obama for long time and think he will have the judgement to make a wonderful president

i have been very disappointed in the clintons non factual attacks

"if he talks in rhetorical platitudes with no substance and no real solutions"

You mean if he says something like "The surge is working"?

avatar
Reply

More like Atheismisreality,,, that would end it for him I'd say,,,

You know how you can tell the surge is working? Iraq isn't on TV anymore and for some time now,,,,

Now back to the program in progress

avatar
Reply

Let's go with the "Iraq isn't on TV, so the surge is working" theory.

Funny enough, no mention on FOX NEWS either.

Where is all the great progress Hannity should be trumpeting?

Here let's list the political progress made:

1. De-De-Baathification - to reverse the genius policy of BushCo. Is it even going to help?

2. _____________________________

Ball is in your court, Cons.

Sorry Slate, all that indicates is that the media is still a puppet to the Bush administration, which is STILL pulling the strings. Bottom line: Our soldiers, OUR CITIZENS are STILL dying on foreign soil in a pointless, useless, illegal, immoral, impractical occupation.

avatar
Reply

A puppet? So he wanted all the neg news all the way up to the time before the surge got underway? Now it takes some thought process to get to where you just went.

avatar
Reply

Indeed Slate, he talks platitudes. There is more poetry in his speeches than substance. He is not ready for prime time. Hillary should use in her adds, the footage of him prising R. Reagan. He awkwardly tried to justify that during the debate. I liked the way Hillary swiftly went after him after he attacked her. Enjoyable debate: J. Edward did very well. B. Obama was aggressive and still not substantive. Hillary, as usually, showed how smart she is; I liked how she aggressively defended herself against Obama's personal attacks. She will be the democrats nominee.

Scot out of all people that would neg my rant about 'stereotypes' I'd neva thought youd be the first

Does that mean you agree? We in the South really would never vote for a man because he's black? Wow amazing how utterly insane it is that such a stereotype like that could survive in such a supposed time of enlightenment,,,,

avatar
Reply

Wow, I feel stupid having helped campaign for Thurbert Baker. http://www.thurbertbaker.com/

Not only is he black, but he's a democrat. What have I done????

Oh yeah, I've voted for the best candidate regardless of party or race. I can't believe that these folks really think they know us southern boys.

avatar
Reply

Tang that's how it's supposed to be,,,, it seems the backwards south is more enlightened than those in the 'progressive' areas of the country who'd neva eva vote for a Republican under any situation,,,

avatar
Reply

I believe we will be surprised. I think Obama will be lucky to carry any southern states, (but that's not to say it couldn't happen).

HOWEVER, I believe the states in the west - Nevada and New Mexico, to give a couple of examples - will hold the key to who wins the next election. And let not forget the popular votes in SEVERAL states in 2004 were by razor thin margins. So anything could happen. The truth is, WE DON'T KNOW...

I will say this: if the race IS between Obama and ANY REPUBLICAN RUNNING, Obama wins.

With Hillary, I'm not so sure, especially if she is up against McCain (especially since people like me and many others will vote for a 3rd party candidate - like Mike Bloomberg - if she is the Democratic nominee).

avatar
Reply

Obama didn't even win the debate last night Scott. I wouldn't be so sure of that statement.

BYW you still didn't anser the question,,, do you believe the stereotype of all southeners being racists, even in 2008?

avatar
Reply

Oh yeah Scott BTW, where have all the primaries and caucuses thus far been held? And how many of those Midwestern, Southwestern and East Coast States have given Mr. O the Nod?

avatar
Reply

If obama loses the south, it wont be about race. It will be because he is not conservative and because he favors amnesty. The latter being the most importatnt. The conservative part matters because I pay too many taxes as it is.

I think you guys are all wet when it comes to Obama. I've really tried seeing what you guys see in him. He's very clean cut and seems to be a nice guy. I don't like the message Obama's current pastor sells, being a black racist is as bad as being a white racist.

Dr. King had ideas and concepts I totally support. For Obama to compare himself is an insult to everything Dr. King supported. I've attended two rallies for Barack. In the 5 hours between the two meetings, he managed to say nothing about what he stands for. In Milwaukee, besides getting the cities mixed up, he said things like, Crime, yes, crime is bad. Murder, yes murder is bad. War, war is bad. No kidding war, murder and crime are bad. He didn't share any real ideas on how to fix them. Simply pointing out problems without a solution is a Clinton or talk radio thing. We don't need or want either. Tell us how you're going to solve the problems. And not by jacking taxes and moving business out.

avatar
Reply

First, Obama and his Pastor are two different people! I'm sure that all of us, yourself included, belong or have belonged to an organization where there is someone in a position of authority that we do not necessarily agree with in all respects.

Second, you must've been attending a Bush speech: Crime, yes, crime is bad. Murder, yes murder is bad. War, yes, war is bad...sounds exactly like a Bush speech to me!

He is a dreaming poet!!!

Obama's speech at Ebenezer Baptist Church was fantastic.

And for those who are criticizing him for the inclusion of gays in this sermon, let me remind them that Coretta Scott King was supportive of the fight for gay rights.

I thought this was a country where all are created and treated equally. By all means let's give yet another class of society preferential treatment over the masses. More divide and conquer. This is exactly what Obama was against. That will not foment unity. It does the exact opposite.

avatar
Reply

Preferential treatment? Or equal treatment?

Please explain exactly who is calling for what treatment that is "preferential."

I don't care who you sleep with as long as it's not a fat intern while in the Oval office. As to his speeches in church, why isn't the press asking about his religion but they're all over Romney for being a Mormon or Thompson for his lack of attending church.

avatar
Reply

I don't know why you even care if anyone sleeps with "a fat intern while in the Oval Office," as long as he does his job anyway.

And though I'm no fan of either Romney or Thompson, I couldn't care less about their religious beliefs or church attendance--I'd much rather hear about what they plan to do if elected that will actually affect the direction of the country.

Obama's idea is a noble one. However, unless he is able to convince bigots like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson from attacking the white race for all the problems of the African Americans it will not succeed. He will also have to overcome "Affirmative Action". This will never happen because it is a staple of the Democratic party. Affirmative action will never go away because it gets votes.

avatar
Reply

My friend, you are still stuck in the land of doubt and cynicism. Obama's message is about positiveness and hope. You CAN change things if you really want to.

avatar
Reply

It's a shame he can't change his ways. Or at least his church.

avatar
Reply

Cushi, change to what? As I've said before I was to his rallies here and he says nothing. I've pulled his voting records. Voting present on the majority of the issues only scares the heck out of me. His current minister is a racist, why hasn't the press asked him about it?

I would welcome a Powell or Rice to run, I'd be one who bank rolls their startup costs. Obama is barely a junior senator with no experience and certainly no history.

Back to the change thing, would that be the tax and spend tradition of Illinois or Washington? Other than the man's race, what change would having Obama as president bring? He's not Jack Kennedy. He's no Ronald Reagan. Perhaps comparing him to Jimmy Carter is proper. Another lefty without a real voting record. I hope I'm wrong, I really do. Because a President Hillary just scares the crap out of me.

avatar
Reply

Again, you are focused on poking holes in Obama's candidacy, when in fact, he has a platform, he has a genuine message, he has more experience than your current leader did when he assumed the position, he has intelligence, skill, imagination, universal appeal, he thinks on his feet, and he is as valid a candidate for the presidency of these United States as any of the others. If you have made up your mind not to vote for him, that's your business, but please just say so and stop trying to downplay or dismiss Obama's qualifications to run.

His message is empty poetry!

Experienced or not, America certainly needs inspiration at this moment. there are so many things coinciding; economic woes, the war, the rise of china etc..

First, the economy isn't bad. We have skilled jobs here in Wisconsin but can't find people to do them. Machinist, welders, tool & die.

As to experience, tell me this because your mind is made up, why vote for him. BTW-I've met with Barack. I've heard him speak. I'm certainly not sold on him at all. He's says nothing for me to want to keep my plants in the USA. At best he's making China, Mexico and India more viable daily.

Change to simply change makes no sense.

NEWS FLASH! Wisconsin is not the entire United States! And if you would rather live in China, Mexico, or India than have a qualified, brilliant Black man as your president, pack your bags.

Obama is a talented & compelling speaker. He however does not reach the same level as Mr. King. To consider him a contender for King's legacy is being mis-informed.

avatar
Reply

Lets just say Obama is a copycat King speaker. Also, It brings tears to my eyes when I reminisce about Al Gores copycat Southern Black preacher imitation.

avatar
Reply

I admit, I dont know a whole lot about Obama, but I am glad I read this article. It is very appropriate for today, and the fact that Obama is attempting to pick up that torch that King once carried is admirable.

I think he has a tough road ahead of himself though. If he is true in his quest, he will find his support from blacks fleeting because he is challenging them to step up their behaviors.

And then there are the white people who are just afraid that Obama is only looking to find a way to channel more money into the black pockets.

All things considered, I agree that racism should be addressed, but I don't think it is the biggest problem America faces at the moment.

Here is my biggest problem with Obama.

avatar
Reply

I didn't see his photo. I love that he's calling for unity in the caption. I saw only African Americans in the crowd. There wasn't a single white guy there, other than the Secret Service. In order for unity, wouldn't you think they'd have him pictured with a mixture of people? Or is his church a racist black church. Racism is racism. It's not a monopoly held by whites only.

avatar
Reply

I find myself wondering if you're a racist yourself or a reslugnicon shill. Every comment you have made has carried a negative connotation and there is a deliberateness about them. Obama's church is not racist and there are whites who attend, whether or not you see them in the picture. Next??

What exactly is your problem?

Get over it.

Just because someone is a member of a church does not mean he will make its agenda his if elected. Didn't some people have the same fear about JFK?

I'm sure you didn't like Kennedy, either, but you must admit he did not follow the Pope's agenda.

avatar
Reply

So, if hillary attended a church and called it's pastor her mentor, even if that curch had similar views as the kkk it wouldn't matter? The church's agenda would not be part of her administration?

avatar
Reply

Again what is your problem? That someone is going to embrace the teachings of Jesus Christ and their African roots? Are you just upset they don't want to put up a picture of white baby Jesus?
