"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits during the Wednesday meeting in exchange for gaining rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes."

What about people who don't work, but do pay taxes on their Social Security? Do they get a check? George Bush gave us a $600. check. What will the Democrats give us?

Nancy Pelosi has become a rather large disappointment.

Anybody who understands Econ 101 knows that the best stimulus package would be one spent 100% on the poor; food stamps and social security.

Bush is his usual self, talking out of one side of his mouth about economic stimulus and then wasting billions doing the opposite.

Bush`s theme: What I do is against what I say I am for.

"What will the Democrats give us?"

--Another budget surplus (instead of trillions of dollars more worth of debt), the return of the international community's respect and cooperation, fewer people around the world wanting to ram planes into our buildings, health insurance for the 10 million children forgotten by the "pro-life" cult...whew...how much time ya got?

Bush also gave you 2 trillion in national debt. That isn't enough for you?

I'm torn between sending it back (I'm sure the Fed needs it more than I do) or keeping it for gas money. As soon as they announced that an agreement had been reached, oil prices started to climb. By the time the checks get to their destinations, oil will be well over 100 dollars a barrel. So the only people it will really help will be the investors responsible for driving up the price of oil. Lucky us!

We spent out way into this mess.....(when we should have been saving) and now we'll spend our way out.

This 'stimulus package' is short sighted nonsense.

I agree, Oil futures began climbing as soon as this news broke. They are back above $90.00 a barrel again http://money.propeller.com/story/2008/01/25/oil... even though the weekly inventory report showed that U.S crude stockpiles were up. This will end up benefiting speculators and big oil more than the rest of us.

I pray that all of those Congresspersons who refused to extend unemployment benefits during this recession will be jobless themselves after November's election.

If this is a "tax rebate" does that mean it is income in 2008? Will you have to pay taxes on it next year?

I can't remember what happened with the 2001 rebates

Why does Propeller keep sticking comments as replies to other comments??? This is seriously getting ridiculous!!! My comment was supposed to be at the end, and now it's stuck under extanker2 and looks like I was talking to him/her...and I'm not!!! Why is this STILL a problem? Are the devs on vacation? I have never seen them take so long to fix something like this. If it's a harder thing to fix than usual, at least let us know. You guys have posted articles about problems and fixes before, please don't keep us in the dark. Are you planning something new? Info, please!!!

We will all be sending it back in the future when we get a fiscally responsible president in office. With a debt that's larger that it has been at any point in history(with inflation taken into account) we will have to pay it back sometime. And knowing that the rich get many a tax breaks, even in the worst of times, it will be we the common people who have to pay it back.

The repubs want this tax break because they are hoping people are dumb enough to think this is a good thing and vote for their candidate. The dems don't want to speak the truth and admit that this will not help and only makes things worse via more debt incurred - again, because they want to get elected just like the repubs.

AG - where do you think the $$ will eventually come from? Running up high deficits mean we owe more $$ plus interest somewhere, sometime someone is going to have to pay & that means us. & probably the $$ are going to go to the Chinese who are the world's largest purchasers of T bills.

Question, do I receive my money in the form of a check from China or does our government first print up the money?

I am so excited to go out and purchase foreign made products to prop up my economy. OOOH, my leaders are seers who look out for all us little people. WEEEEE, I'm so excited, sounds like a song, "I'm so excited".

China doesn`t mind because it will be their economy that we actually prop up more than our own.

Wouldn't it make more sense to use this money on public works projects. Put the unemployed to work repairing our roads, schools and other infrastructure that we "just dont have the funds" to fix. That way you would be taking people off the dole and putting money in their pockets to spend.

Most of these checks will probably be spent by people who are carrying at least as much credit card debt. No stimulus there.

Always heard of the "Law of Supply and Demand" , never dawned on me until yesterday what it meant .

The Commodity Traders raise price per barrel of oil (doesn't anyone see what is happening ?) on the Tax Credit approval , so we , the American people have a small SUPPLY of money , and the greedy DEMAND we give it to them .

Has nothing to do with usage of a product , the ENRON-ish trading is still in full swing , we the Sheep of America get fleeced more and more every day .

Well I'm surprised the dumbocrats could actually do this. I guess if U get a bunch of idiots in a room and all of them try to get their brain cell to fire at the same time that it might work once or even twice. I guess stupid people in large groups isn't always a problem.

Matters not what party represents you, they don't, they represent only themselves and screw America at the same time. Surprised at one thing, it seems like most of the conservatives love the idea of the giveaways while the Democrats on this blog are railing against it.

Just goes to show the unintelligent Republicans would follow Bush over a cliff if he told them it was the righteous thing to do. Followers are the norm in the Republican party.

A nation of fools and crooks with Bankruptcy inevitable. Capitalism equates to an upper crust society with the middle and lower class serving their masters every whim.

Meanwhile white collar crime pays while the other classes are persecuted for just being average with morals.

What`s the worst that happens to white collar criminals who steal six or even seven figures? Pay it back or keep and and go to fed jail for a year or so, but chances are you will have enough for a good life after that.

That`s if you get caught and actually if the prosecutor decides to prosecute. It` much easier and cost effective to go after blue-collar criminals because they cannot afford private legal advice.

This is just a continuation of more of the same. Of course we could use the money. But it will not compensate for the last 5 or 6 years of higher prices and lack of jobs or our soliders getting killed. How easy it seems to be to overlook the very important issues when they dangle a $ in front of our faces. This is a bandaid, not a cure.

"Its always nice when I get to keep my money."

--Isn't it terrific? After all, the only thing that really matters in the end is that *we* as individuals are doing well financially. That's all the "good economy" anyone really needs. That's what life is all about.

And who cares if we are all just a blink of an eye away from a personal tragedy that could ruin us financially and worse. Now, if only we could get Republicans to worry only about their own reproductive organs the way they worry only about their own bank accounts. That's the challenge.

Anyhoo... I guess a few extra bucks in the wallet are worth the price of seeing your country flushed down the toilet by the GOP. Enjoy. ;-)
