I think you're reacting to another 'fear' campaign. Right now, who is going to attack us militarily? Who is worried that their big pile of pork might vanish?
Now that we have thought about that, being prepared is not a bad thing, but let's behave rationally and not start earmarking all that money we don't have and instead figure out how we can use what we do have effectively. That's where our leadership on both sides, but especially the Republican side lately, has failed us. We're too darn broke to respond.

What a bolt of truth, dandt1612.
We currently spend more on defense than all the other nations of the entire planet Earth totaled together. Our problem is NOT that we're being too cheap with our defense budget. It is exactly like Ron Paul says. For the last 50 years, Republicans and Democrats alike have been involved in a bone-headed foreign policy of empire building.
We've backed ruthless dictators while claiming to be the champions of democracy. Our CIA has helped in the overthrow and even assassinate popular elected leaders of other lands. We've instituted secret wire tapping of our own citizens and gulags and torture. And now we have even stooped to launching wars of aggression and talk of occupying foreign lands for the next 100 years.
What we need to fix our military is not more money but more common sense in our leaders.

If true, there are questions that should be asked of bush and co. Very hard questions, you have spent almost all of our national budget on the military well at the lease that is what you have been telling us and we are not the best there is. Where did our money go?
I really think the next president if he/she is a DEM should investigate this administration inside and out. It is needed because if we do nothing this can happen again...we need to set an example for those would be bushes.
I am sooo dejected by this lot.

This mess was long in motion before GW. It started after the end of the Cold War. Was put on hold a little after the Gulf War, then put into high gear during the Clinton years. This took decades not a few years.
How about this , create a Home Guard (seperate from the NG/AR) They only operate in the U.S. ,no overseas deployment. Fill it with retired military(over 20, but under 30 years fed active service), or people that have not completed their 8 year committment.
OR if you don't like that, talk to your congreesman about reinstating the draft.

But I thought everything Bush was doing was making us safer.
How come every report that comes out from independant sources says otherwise.

besides agreeing that the guard isnt ready and able to defend this country in case of an attack, what about the govt organizing its citizens to defend our own neighborhoods in case of an attack?
i am not talking military training so much but there would be nothing wrong with protecting fuel centers, knowing which locals have generators, neighborhood leaders storing cases of bottled water and canned goods...in all likely hood the next disaster wont be a terrorist attack,it will be a natural disaster

We don't need citizens to prepare themselves with weapons and provisions anymore. That's what FEMA is for. In fact, I believe, in a few months, our gun rights are going to go the way of the rest of our rights. Stocking up on emergency rations might not be a bad idea. Food prices are going through the roof. Cloned meats are making their debut, and there's no telling what the side effects will be. We don't need to be invaded. All they need to do is cut off our supply lines, and we'll cry uncle.

Grassroots Community organization for safety is a great idea, however, once your good idea gets into the hands of corp interests groups they will develop a scheme to privatize the organization so they can drain all the monies in the name of profits. Privatizing and for- profitizing social and community agencies just filters governtment funding and citizens hard work into the pockets of wealthy investors.
Just look at the once very successful NON-PROFIT hospital and healthcare systems. Ever since for profit mentalities and insurance corps took over healthcare we have had the worst system of care ever experienced in our country.
Lets not destroy our safety and military too.

Could someone explain, the title of this article is
"US military may not be ready for attack"
And then only talks about the States NG units. The NG units are part of the Military but they are not "THE MILITARY"
THE MILITARY is The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and the Ready Reserves of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines.
The NG and ANG belong to the States and are not Federal troops, unless they have been "federalized" as in deployed over seas.
This article paints a picture that is not exactly true.

I'm with you. Instead of spending just have of the Federal Budget on the military, we need to spend it all on the military and let the free market take care of the rest....I think there is suicide bomber under my bed., I'm outta here!

Sen. Lamar Alexander has been trying to get funds allocated for new equipment, but no one seems to be listening. Even the general officers in the Pentagon have offered him little support. Tennessee's National Guard has been among those most frequently called to duty in Iraq, and each unit has been required to leave it's equipment there for use by other units rotating in to the country. The consequences are apparent when you drive by this state's armories and see empty parking lots where a transportation battalion is headquartered or where an armored infantry unit is based.
In addition to being unable to perform any duties until their are re-equipped, these units cannot even continue their regular training.

"We don't have many troops left here. That's not rocket science!"
Uhm what? It doesn't take a rocket scientist but it does take
BASIC MATH
Currently there are 71,711 Army National Guard and Army Reserve activated and deployed WORLD WIDE.
Currently there are 325,000 personnel In the NG (ANG)
That means 253,289 NG (ANG) are not deployed and are here in the USA.

Besides Iraq, don't forget were spending billions to protect Europe, South Korea and oil soaked countries like the Saudis.Let these nations spend the dough to protect themselves and se where there economies go.
And don't forget I don't care what anybody says, RUSSIA AND CHINA ARE ENEMIES STILL.

Interesting when our enemies are propping up our economy.
Let's be honest. The US supports China both economically and politically in all its human rights horrors and in return China and Russia either support or make token objections to all the US's human rights abuses around the world.
No one's our enemy if it'll make us money.

So, much like Iraq, we prop up dictators in power just so we can then call them enemies? I fail to see the logic. If we don't like what's going down in Pakistan, we should stop supporting Musharref and put another puppet in power, same as we should have done in Iraq.
Dionys is right. There are no enemies. Only smoke, mirrors, and PROFIT. Unless you're just a normal citizen, in which case you only get the smoke and the mirrors.

I guess the second amendment will prove its value if we are attacked. The initial wave of chemical, biological and tactical nukes will take out many people but not all of us. When the troops of the invading aggressor try to get a foot hold they will have to deal with snipers and sharpshooters who know the terrain. God help the invaders because they will surely need it.

There has virtually no period in our history in which our military was prepared for a catastrophic attack upon us. Even during WWII our forces lacked the ability to repel a major attack on the USA. Especially in time of war our forces are depleted at home. During peace the govt reduces the military while attempting to maintain manpower in overseas posts. It has long been our military policy that the best defence against a major attack on the US is to have forces spread throughout the world in the 'hope' of detecting and stopping the attack before it happens. During WWII we could have easily had Nazi forces, along with Mexican forces attacking our southern border, but the Mexicans rejected the Nazi idea and money offer. In the 1812 war our army/navy was too weak to prevent a British invasion & burning of Wash. DC. Such is our history - but always our citizens rise to the defense when needed.

I don't think you understand the neo-conservative's position on this thread.
They want us to be ALWAYS READY. Even when there's little or no threat.
They want us TO SLEEP WITH OUR FINGER ON THE TRIGGER. If we blow our own heads off, or those of our loved ones, well that's what war for profit is supposed to do.
I don't even want to mention the finger on THE BUTTON. EVERY Republican but Paul said they would PREEMPTIVELY NUKE. (Meaning they would happily start WWIII...)

'Rediculous little gun nuts......' - you have got to be kidding me. The USA would not exist if not for the 'Rediculous little gun nuts......' who have protected our shores since the beginning of the very idea of the USA. These 'gun nuts' have formed strong civil defense militias to stand in our protection while our military was protecting us in the warzone. I am retired military, 54 yrs old and do not own a gun (child in the house). But if it looked like the USA was in danger of invasion I would get a gun (not a .38) and protect my family, neighbors and even you - even if I were to die doing so. Look at the Soviet/Afghan war - the Soviets lost to mostly pre-WWI equipted civilians who formed into armed groups against a common enemy. The USA cannot be conquered as long as the 'rediculous gun nuts' exist.

You should see MY list...
You really wouldn't want me proficient with an automatic weapon. (Just ask long time propeller contributers...)
In my state they tried to make it legal for ANYONE to carry a concealed weapon. Even crazed street people! (A gun with maybe a silencer in my pocket. All nice and legal...Think about it...)

From what I read in the story they said that not enough troops were available in case of a biological, chemical or nuclear attack, I just wonder how many troops would be needed in such a case as the deployment of troops for such an attack would be an after the fact move. The only real purpose for troops in a situation such as this would be as a law and order force, and from what I saw after the 9/11 attack most people in your country did not panic. I have to agrre with some of the posts who would like to see your military in your country.

OMG...I'm barely over the embarrassment and shame of finding out the phone company pulled the plug on our illegal wiretapping activity 'cause we failed to pay back bills. And now this? Thoroughly disgraceful. Oh, well... Bush and Cheney *did* promise us shock and awe. Eleven more months til this hellish nightmare is over. Wow

Maybe, we are partly saying the same thing. But I didn't say "over react". I meant his reaction is one that those who play both sides of the fence want. They want money, period! They are more than happy Bush has left them an opportunity to scare the U.S. public into more spending. But where we might diverge in opinion on is how are we going to pay for all those nice new shiny gadgets that we will be made to believe that are needed.
Now I will concede that preparedness is important and shiny gadgets are part of that. Let's just do it right without screaming that the sky is going to fall and begging the Chinese and Saudis for more money. This is far more dangerous to our health I believe.
Now if you want to talk about spending and the sky falling, I'm right witcha on dat one!

At the sake of being labelled a "terrorist," may I share with you my experience in the 82nd Airborne? I was not drafted, I volunteered. While serving I was what they called a "lifer."
After JFK was assassinated I had already changed. I was no longer a lifer, I wanted out of the bull***t I heard the politicos speak, but had learned we were being lied to.
After returning from Panama, Central America, where a jumping Brother saved my nasty-ass from being beaten to death on the side of a C-130. I owed him, BIGTIME!!! He lived in Washington, DC. To repay my cool friend, I promised him a night to drink his ass-off, where ever he wanted to drink. Arriving in DC in our Class-A's, I marched him into the first bar I could find. They wouldn't let him drink in any white bar, knowing he saved my ass.
You want us to lay it on the line, but don't think he is an equal? This country hasn't changed...after 50-years.

most of the comments here are from people out of touch of living in la la land if there is a NBC attack your f**ked but the best way to protect you and your family is a good set of bio warfare gear gas masks etc the other danger in these circumstances is a good pump action shot gun because looters etc are a bigger immediate threat than enemy forces and if you want the truth no single country has the ability to invade the USA.

..if you don't have a full protective ensemble and the means to use it...with replacement gear every week at least..forget it, a mask is but a small part of saving your life... The military should have the means (equipment and training) to provide this and the decontamination facilitites that can be delivered timely anywhere in the country... not so, by this article!
