A liberal named Jeff Cohelan, sat me down in his office late one evening and gave me a tutorial on American politics. "Young man," he asked, "Do you know what liberalism is?" I had no ready answer. "The essence of true liberalism," he said, "is tolerance." And he repeated it, "tolerance."

Yes, liberalism is tolerance but it is also a lot more. Liberalism, as in liberal arts, is knowing about about and understanding ideas apart from your primary field of interest or culture. It is more than just acting in your own interest. Liberalism not a sanctuary for traditional ideas nor an open mind in which all ideas are treated equally but one in which the best ideas are cultivated. Most of all liberalism asks questions and the most important one is why. These are the qualities that set it apart from conservatism.
