Politics – The Rocky Mountain News in Denver and the Daily News in New York were the only papers to give their entire front pages to honoring the men and women killed in Iraq.
In a recent newspaper article, national polls show that the economy, the mortgage and housing crises are now of greatest concern to the American public. It is not that the public does not care about our soldiers in harm's way. It is merely the fact that when problems hit you at home, that gets more attention than problems far away that don't directly affect you.
Secondly, the Surge has lessened the frequency of violence in Iraq. Therefore, the level of concern has correspondingly dropped.
Thirdly, the war and its attendant frustrations have been constantly at the forefront for 5 continuous years. I feel there is a growing sense of helplessness in the public about the ability of public sentiment to influence or change the minds of Bush/Cheney. Cheney has flatly stated he doesn't give a damn about what the public wants. So now the public is simply ignoring the whole issue and waiting for the elections to bring about a change in the government and in the handling of the war.
By ignoring those 4,000 deaths, our corporate media is belittling their ultimate sacrifice.
Thanks to the Bushies negotiating with the enemy, violence levels are all the way down to 2005 levels. An improvement, but is that something to celebrate as the media has been doing?
At the same time the 4,000th GI was killed in Iraq, the leading news story in America was Rev Wright. Pretty sick stuff actually.

I get the Rocky and they weren't honoring the dead as much as taking a swipe at Bush. Never a headline with good news, only the bad. War,Econom... can't believe we lost Elam to the Atlanta Dogfighters!
