Politics – The Democratic Party's preoccupation with the question of when America will leave Iraq rather than with how America will win in Iraq reminds me of how and why this nearly lifelong liberal and Democrat became identified as a conservative and Republican activist.
I could easily vote for a man or woman like JFK or FDR. Today, like Prager says, liberalism's moral compass is broken thanks to people like Pelosi, Murtha, Reid, to name a few. I couldn't stomach voting for any of them even if I took a chaser of Pepto- Bismol before entering the booth.
You may dislike Jimmy Carter, and he might not have been the best president, but his moral compass has always functioned just fine, and it is still functioning perfectly to this day.
If you think a moral compass should point a former President to kiss a Hamas terrorist leader...I'm seriously questioning what you mean by functioning perfectly to this day. Cuz that was a major malfunction by any reasonable standard.
I think its called reachin out to the enemy to establish dialog.
Are you ridikulin Jimmy Carter for doin what Jesus Christ preaches?
Mark 2:15-17a
"And as he sat at dinner in Levi's house, many tax collectors and sinners were also sitting with Jesus and his disciples--for there were many who followed him. 2:16 When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" 2:17 When Jesus heard this, he said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners."
Aint you simply admittin that we Christian Conservatives are a political party and as such have rejected the essence of what Jesus taught?
Well, its about tiem you owned up to that.
"You may dislike Jimmy Carter, and he might not have been the best president, but his moral compass has always functioned just fine, and it is still functioning perfectly to this day."
His "compass" doesn't concern me
His "judgment" does
I agreed with Candida until the moment Carter kissed a terrorists butt.before that I always gave Carter a plus for standing by his principles.
I don't understand how people such as rdy and sonofthemaskt and others jsut throw the baby out with the bath water.
Carter has done so much for the people of this nation and this world - unlike any other president, he's dedicated his life to doing God's work.
So Carter made a mistake in your eyes - so now you hate him? So now all of his work is null and void. Now all those people he helps are forgotten?
Grow up. The world is not black and white.
I did not intend to condemn Carter overall but this act and never said and NEVER insinuated I hate him.I never said his work is null and void and I do believe I am grown up.
Because this medium is not my best form of communication but I'm learning does that merit an attack or request for calrification. The world is grey.
What I feel is a negative does not negate all the plusses he's racked up but that does not mean I like by all means what he did.
Once a politician is safely out of the way, his virtues (or lack of them ) come safely to light; and it is easy for us to acknowledge them.
If we sent most 2008 conservatives, back to 1960, they would think JFK was a radical, rabble-rousing, bubble-headed young rich kid who was weak on communism and wanted to expand government benefits to include Catholics, Jews, socialitsts and other non-whites.
CRYMTYPHON
"If we sent most 2008 conservatives, back to 1960, they would think JFK was a radical,"
"If we sent most 2008 conservatives, back to 1960, they would"
Do the same thing as Liberals, invest in IBM, knowing the outcome of 48 years of horse races, it's a safe bet they would bet.

Dennis Prager is the man. I really hate that I don't get to hear his show anymore. They air it a night here in Ga on 920WGKA. The only problem is, once the sun goes down, the am airwaves are overtaken by hispanic radio shows that are not being aired by networks.
The FCC is supposed to shut down illegal radio transmitters. Why aren't they doing their job? It is not that hard to find them. A radio direction finder is not that difficult to make. The antenna to a radio is done in a loop. The open face of the loop will point to the transmitter. You don't know if it is in front or back. Draw a line on a map. Go to a different location and repeat. The crossing of the two lines is the location. The FCC has this equipment and can accurately find the transmitter in less that an hour. They have the authority to shut it down and if repeated confiscate the transmitter.
"The only problem is, once the sun goes down, the am airwaves are overtaken by hispanic radio shows that are not being aired by networks."
"The FCC is supposed to shut down illegal radio transmitters. Why aren't they doing their job? It is not that hard to find them."
Because the transmitters are in Mexico and there's no restriction on there power level
Once the sun goes down AM signal bounce off the ionosphere.
At lest that's my first guess.
Tanglang:
Mexican stations are not illegaly broadcasting over your program. It is physics. At night time, you will hear more AM stations because AM signals can potentialy go around the globe at night. It is hard for AM stations not to drown each other out.
"The ionosphere bends signals best at night because the Sun is no longer ionizing the atmosphere then. That's why you pick up distant AM signals at night. "
A nice political cartoon would be Prager standing next to a "Conservative". Let's just go all the way and say he's flanked by the Idiot-In-Chief and Dick "Told Ya So in 94" Cheney.
They are all smiling with Prager saying, "Wow, guys, that is some mighty fine evildoer battling you're doing."
Then have a US National Debt Counter behind them.
Moral compass?
I think the needle is confused.
If I walk North-West (to the right of north) will I find conservatism?
Will all the houses in that town be painted with a bright red Republican brush?
If I walk South-East (to the left of north) will the town of liberalism be painted dark blue?
Or would they both be muddy shades of purple?
I think if I where looking down at the compass and instead of an N,W,S,E there was a C, R, L,D the letters would not be glued down and they would have the same magnetic pole as the needle.
I am tempted to write some examples; but I am too biased.
Propeller lost my first post. I'll try to sum it up. What is a liberal? Is it a socialist? Clearly not, liberals have been just as clearly anti-socialism/communism as other ideologies. Is it progressivism? Certainly the American style of liberalism has its roots in the Progressive Era. Is it anti-war? Not at all, liberals have sent us to war before and they probably will again. Who was our first liberal President? Perhaps Theodore Roosevelt. Some may say FDR. Who was our last liberal President? Some may say Kennedy, others LBJ. Some even suggest Nixon. One definition of liberalism:
"Liberalism wagers that a state... can be strong but constrained รข;; strong because constrained... Rights to education and other requirements for human development and security aim to advance the opportunity and personal dignity of minorities and to promote a creative and productive society."
He's right to criticize the Left's obsession with leaving Iraq. As a Liberal myself, I think the invasion was stupid and events have proved that to be true but we can't just simply walk away at this point.
What Pelosi and Reid have done is left the Democratic party in the unenviable position of hoping things go bad even more!

Prager asks himself whether he changed or "liberalism" changed. FTA: "As I know my values, the answer is as clear as it could be - it is liberalism that has changed, not I. In a word, liberalism became leftism. Or, to put it another way - since my frame of reference is moral values - liberalism's moral compass broke."
About 15 years ago I saw a very poignant editorial cartoon depicting JFK walking into Democrat National Committee headquarters holding a briefcase labeled "platform."
In the office, two DNC staffers were laughing, saying to the effect of: "He's for a strong military, stopping communism and cutting taxes ... AND HE CALLS HIMSELF A DEMOCRAT!"
I always say, JFK would be Republican these days. Reagan left the Dem party for similar reasons.
Are you kiddin?
THE WHOLE WORLD WANTS TO BE REPUBLICAN these days!!
We are loved around the world.
Poeple liek us for our zeal in placin tourists with guns in varius locations. Thats prollally what most interantional countries love us for. That , and the fact that wherever these tourists with guns are, theres lots of explosions with bodie parts a flyin.
Then theres all the money that Republiacns throw around. Why we spend $12 Billion A MONTH in Iraq alone!! Billions in Germany, Afghanistan, Korea ... all over!!
Poeple notice and approve of the way that we refuse to help the middle classes too. iN FACT, our motto otta me "Billions for War, but not a dime for the middle class for college, health care, infrastructure, good goverment".
Yup, JFK woulda liekly been a Republican alright.
Course, in contrast to your 'off the cuff' comment, theres the documented assessment that 1960's "Mr. Conservative", Barry Goldwater would be a moderate today.*
*Based on voting record and the change in morals of the present day Neo-Cons.
GOP supported strong military.
Neo-Cons support strong military suppliers, work against soldiers.
GOP supported keepin goverment outta poeples private lives
Neo-Cons support total access to all Americans privacy.
GOP supported small goverment.
Neo-Cons under Reagan/Bush2 greatly expanded goverment size
GOP supported less spendin by goverment
Neo-Cons under Reagan/Bush2 are the two biggest deficit spenders ... by massive proportions!
Yes, if theres oen thing we Christian Conservatives ken say bout throwin our lot in with the Neo-Cons, we really showed that we are a extremist right wing political party first, a reflection of Christian values second ... or possibly third.
Now lets all sing together!!
NO CHILD CARE FOR KIDS!
MORE WAR!!
WELFARE FOR THE WEALTHY ONLY!!
SUBSIDIES FOR CORPORATIONS!!
oH my! When I look at it THAT way, I do believe we lost our MORALS!

SonOfTheMask: "Prager asks himself whether he changed or "liberalism" changed. FTA: "As I know my values, the answer is as clear as it could be - it is liberalism that has changed, not I."
He is right as far as saying that he hasn't changed. I don't think liberalism has changed either. Judging from this article, Prager has never been a liberal to start with. He doesn't even know the meaning of the word.
He confuses liberalism with the Democratic Party. The two are not at all the same.
