.....and who is more likely to bring the country together? ....and who is more likely to CHANGE the direction the country is going?....and who is more likely to get the respect of the world BACK from the brink?

Doesn't matter if he can't win. Ron Paul would be better than anyone running... doesn't do him any good now does it?

If you go back to the 2004 election these same people all claimed the same thing about Kerry.
Kerry was not the most electable candidate at all.
But media touted him as such! And so did the party bigwigs.
Though he did well in 2 of the 3 debates, it didn't matter.
He was not elected.
Clinton is relying on the same "wisdom" for her election, the people who didn't like Kerry don't like the Clintons even more.
Republicans will stay home in droves to vote for McCain, especially after being demoralized by the Bush legacy. UNLESS they are whipped into a frenzy by the thought of the Clintons returning to the White House.

The argument is based on paradigms that are outdated. There are numerous studies showing quite the opposite. One factor not taken into account here is the rabid hatred the republican base has for Clintons. The republican party is running attack ads against Obama during primaries - but not Clinton.(ought to tell you something folks)
McCain won't really bring out the republican base, but Hillary will!!
Now don't get me wrong Clinton will do a far better job than a republican and I will vote for her over a 3rd Bush term. BUT-
Obama is quite strong in many states not previously believed to be "blue". (Which calls into question the Clinton campaign argument about "must win" states.)

In fact 3 networks showed that if Obama is the candidate, only a few states can be counted on as republican wins, that the western states and many southern states previously taken for granted by the GOP, become quite competitive or blue. Both supporters of Obama and Clinton will be demoralized and hurt if their candidate loses the nomination, but in the end as long as the process is fair, since many of their policys are
similar, I believe the interests of the nation and indeed the world outweigh any ill feelings we may have about the campaign and the votes will be there to insure there is no 3rd Bush term.
Sadly because Obama himself has tried to keep race out of the campaign and has always stood for focusing on "what is right in America, not what is wrong", it is being forced into play.

There are indeed racists who would never vote for him. Though these people will likely vote for McCain anyway, I doubt they will have much impact. (the democrats who were racists mostly left the democratic party back in the 1960s when the party took strong stands in the civil rights movement.)
