if he went to 57 and had one more to go, that would be 58. If he had two more to go (Alaska and Hawaii) that would be 59, so it doesn't even really work if you say he just said fifty by mistake instead of 40.....
oh, well, it's not as if I never get tangled in words, but we all no that's totally unacceptable in the POTUS. After all, we all know that every slip of the tongue that Bush makes is proof positive of his diminished intelligence.

actually the math does work if you follow the whole sentence (none of this actually matters, but this is kinda amusing)
If he had meant 47 (which we have no way of knowing) it would have been something like
"I have been to 47 states, I have one more to go, my staff wont let me go to alaska and hawaii...."
you see 47 plus 1 equals 48 continental states plus the 2 he can't go to equals 50.
of course he could be really stupid, but it seems like that might have shown up before now.
Perhaps he went to some states more than once. He meant 57 stops.
People can't judge him except by what he says. And what he said was "57 states" plus at least one.
