Politics – According to speech exerpts released in advance, McCain will say that only a small contingent of troops in non-combat roles would remain in Iraq five years from now. He predicts the drawdown will be possible because al Qaeda in Iraq will be defeated and a democratic government will be operating in the war-torn country.
And on the other hand, five more years (a number obviously pulled out of thin air and based on zero real data, other than maybe contractor profit projections) and we're already broke from this debacle? Kiss this campaign goodbye already.
I was trying to submit this story when I discovered Beau's submit, but I was going to use the tag: QUAGMIRE
It is true he offers no plan nor reason he expects this to happen. It is a number pulled out of the air.
Sheesh.
CRYMTYPHON:
"It is true he offers no plan nor reason he expects this to happen. It is a number pulled out of the air."
That's true. McCain offers absolutely no plan for achieving this goal. What's even more devious is his target date of 2013 -- the year AFTER a first term in office. In other words, McCain's actually not committing to his promise until after his first term in office and after he can be re-elected to a second term.
How convenient.

McCain has suddenly been converted to the Democrats' position. The difference is that he calls his "cut-and-run" strategy a victory. He gives no details as to why he believes al Qaeda in Iraq will be defeated or how the Iraqi government will be able to keep them in check.
From the article:
"During the Florida primary, McCain blasted former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney for what he said was support of a withdrawal timeline. Democrats, meanwhile, pilloried McCain for saying American troops could remain in Iraq for up to 100 years -- a reference McCain later likened to the presence of U.S. bases in Germany or South Korea.
"Just last month, McCain said that 'To promise a withdrawal of our forces from Iraq, regardless of the calamitous consequences to the Iraqi people, our most vital interests, and the future of the Middle East, is the height of irresponsibility. It is a failure of leadership.' "
