McCain just can't shake that lobbyist link

Politics – John McCain's ties with Washington lobbyists are not among serious challenges for his campaign- not with the shape of the U.S. economy and public opinion still shifting away from his steadfast support for indefinite military commitments in Iraq. But influence peddling will be difficult for McCain to explain to voters as well.

This is only one of many troubling influence peddling incidents in McCain's record. Another recent cause for concern is his right-hand man/lobbyist ties to the Putin-backed political party. A consultant to Sen. John McCain hired a public-relations firm last year to pump up the Ukrainian political party backed by Russian leader Vladimir Putin, according to documents filed with the Justice Department. The lobbying firm of Davis Manafort Inc. arranged for the public-relations firm's work through an affiliate last spring, at the same time Davis Manafort was being paid by the Republican presidential candidate's campaign. The firm is co-owned by lobbyist Rick Davis, manager of Sen. McCain's presidential campaign, and longtime Republican strategist Paul Manafort.

McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said Mr. Davis receives no income from Davis Manafort, although he is a co- owner of the firm.

You know, Putin, McCain we don't care what sockpuppet our hand wears. Long as they do what we wish and money is made it's all good.

Principals? Nah who needs em?

RFE, the U.S. elected Bush I. Many people still don't realize he once was the U.S. CIA Director. McCain is dependent on the Bush family for their support and that of their friends. A potentially close relationship with ex-KGB Putin doesn't surprise me at all.

There's a word for McCain and his close relationship with the lobbyists its called being "dirty" and by the time this election cycle is over they will own him body and soul - if they don't already!

We neither need or want a President who owes his office to the special interest groups as we have had one for the past 7.5 years and seen what a disaster it is!

johnqpublic, You had better not vote for any of the candidates that are running for office then, Hillary,Obama and McCain except lobbyist money. Check "opensecrets.com" for who recieved oil money and you will find all of the candidates are listed.

When you look at the damage caused to the middle class and America by the lobbyist supported junta in there now, why would we want more ofr the same? Other then the AG group who seem to think what radio station Obama listens to is crucial to their voting decision, why elkectr the lobbyists for anohter 4 years? Enough is enough

What is interesting about the article to me is that the newspaper is from McCain's own back yard and is primarily conservative media. The news source wrote, "We have long maintained lobbying and campaign money are not the universal evils that many, including McCain, have proclaimed them to be." That certainly indicates their conservative stance on mixing Corporations with government. Then, they implicate McCain for taking money and having political ties and interest by "continuing to use them to benefit his constituents and his own career." WOW. How damning is that when the NeoCons themselves point out McCain's inconsistencies and corruption? This should be making national news.

It most definitely is a notable irony, but it probably will not make the national news. I'm sure that FOX won't utter a peep about it ...

McCain appears to have been Bush-Whacked. He is easy prey for the lobbyists and religious right, as he has sold out whatever convictions that he may have once had in order to gain power. I believe and hope that enough of the American people will see that he is just another puppet of the corporate dictators like Bush and Cheney.

Straight Talk my "s". It must be hard to resist the perks and profits "playing ball" with lobbyists and narrow special interests can bring. The culture of corruption is so deeply infecting national policy, that finding someone that isn't dirty is nearly impossible. We must reject all politicians who blatantly subvert public interest for personal gain. What makes McCain's pandering particularly insidious is he pretends to be the "straight talk" maverick, opposed to his own tactics.

Gosh !! Where's the "wannabe cloaked by the Republican name" supporters ?!? Maybe they've finally realized they need to come out from under the magic mushrooms and start their own party ?!?

McCain or Cain..in the Bible you'll find your answer.

McCain has a lot of skeletons that is unshakable, but right now his connections to lobbyists is the front runner. In the general, a lot of his skeletons need to be brought to light!

It's time to put an end to this type of politics. I think that the more McCain talks the more he will sink himself. Yesterday he was acknowledging global climate change, that must sit well with his core constituents.

tchef, "It's time to put an end to this type of politics", you had better start looking for someone other than the three remaining candidates then. All three of them are nothing but politicians and will say and do almost anything to get your vote.

There are pretty big differences among them. All politicians want your vote, some actually want to do more than just freeload off lobbyists though.

avatar

I think Bush and Obama both want to do more than freeload off lobbyists, but lobbyists are a fact of life. People forget that it's not just large corporations who lobby--it's also people from environmental groups, human rights groups, etc. Lobbyists also provide an educational component.

What we're seeing here is the corporatist lobbyists, and I personally am sick and tired of anti-science religious extremists destroying formerly booming parts of our economy and trying to get cultural myths added to school science curricula. I'm afraid McCain has sold out to this pack of moralizing thugs. Add to that the serious corporatists in big pharma and defense contracting and you have a mess.

yea they all promise everything to you so so you will vote for them. but you can pretty much get an idea who is faking it or not. i think the more they talk and the more they big i big deal means they are lieing and facking like preacher boy obama. he thinks hes going to win even talking to the president what a fool. at least clinton dont do stuped thingls like that she just does her things. why are most men so stuped and ignorant and religios and chicken? maria

Obama has lobbyists in his camp as well. So does Hillary. In fact there is not one politician that doesn't know a few friendly lobbyists. Ask Barak about the $200,000. dollars from Exelon, just before he sponcered friendly legislation that made them very happy.

Like comparing a puddle to the Pacific Ocean. Obama is primarily financed by individuals giving 50 bucks, small but very numerous donations.

There are a lot of things McCain can't shake. Worst of them is John McCain. This year's presidential debates can be carried out on YouTube with just one candidate speaking. McCain vs. McCain.

McCain against the Bush tax cuts versus McCain for the Bush Tax cuts.

McCain against torture versus McCain for torture.

McCain for talking to Hamas versus McCain against talking to Hamas.

Google the topics to view both McCains, then pick the McCain you support for the fall election... and pray that's the one you get.

What Republican or Democrat can escape? They are all guilty of lobbyist. Can they not take the lobbyist money? I kinda of doubt it. Those Superdelegates are lobbyist.

Most superdelgates are politicians or active participants in Democratic Party organizations.
