Schwarzenegger calls for 'rebranding' GOP

Politics – California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger created shock and awe in the Republican Party when he warned years ago that the GOP was in danger of "dying at the box office" by failing to make the sale to a wide swath of voters.

Schwarzenegger isn't doing to well in California right now!

I think what has really brought Bush down is spending, spending, spending. If it were only on the war he might get by with it, but he has been worse than the Democrats. He should have held the Democrats feet to the fire over their promise to make all pork public.

What brought Bush down is the same thing that brought the GOP down. Lies, distortion, obfuscation, hypocrisy, repeatedly defying the will of the public, criminal activity beyond the pale and a lack of any hint of humility or contrition. We said we didn't want Bush to privatize Social Security but what was he doing during the very moments he should have been showing his support to the citizens of New Orleans in a national emergency? You guessed it...Doing what *Bush* wanted to do. Hangin' out in CA doin' things his way. And this has been repeated many times throughout his Presidency, Iraq, stem cell research, Schiavo, SCHIP, sub-prime mortgage crisis, etc, etc, etc...

I think of libsR as one of the idiots that spit in the face of us as we returned. Blaming the soldiers instead of the leaders.

Just completely off base and stupid. LOL

Remember the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. libsR reminds me of a compilation of the disturbed personalities in the movie. Minus Jack Nickelson. LMAO

"The Republican idea is a great idea, but we can't go and get stuck with just the right wing," Schwarzenegger said. "Let's let the party come all the way to the center. Let those people be heard as much as the right."

He observed that his own political opponents, including former Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, tried to define him in much the way McCain is being defined by Democrats - as joined at the hip with Bush.

"It didn't work," he laughed. But "how does (McCain) beat the Democrats? By offering a better future. He needs to offer hope, he needs to go in and show he can solve the problem in Iraq and have better relations with other countries again ... and bring the economy back."

The Govenator is not doing we out here right now. He is cutting spending for the most needy, while still giving tax benefits for the most wealthy. He is talking about raising taxes thru an increased sales tax because of the motgage meltdown and the failing economy.

He is becoming downright Democratic in the way he wants to increase taxes. Of course he still wants the wealthy to have the tax breaks.

Just cut the medical benefits for the poor. Hell who cares if the poor die or not right?

As long as the wealthy get those tax loopholes.

I'm not talking about the funding for the illegal aliens either. I'm sure they will still get theirs. Because everyone knows the neocons need cheap labor for their businesses. Let the taxpayers pay for the cost of the medical care.

There are many issues the neocons have missed the mark on. I could continue to list them but there isn't enough space.

Try getting back to a responsible leadership in the party first.

As Democrats get closer to picking their party's nominee, McCain is getting advice on his image "rebranding" from some of the same GOP insiders who helped Schwarzenegger win re-election. They include senior campaign adviser Steve Schmidt and former Schwarzenegger communications director Adam Mendelsohn, partners in a GOP political consulting firm, Mercury LLC in Sacramento.

"The Republican brand may be in a bad position because of the Bush presidency, but people recognize that John McCain is not George Bush. John McCain has a long track record of being a nontraditional Republican - and so does Schwarzenegger," said Mendelsohn.

Ron Paul has the radical idea of returning to the original brand...but the neocons who hijacked the original republican party just don't get it...better wait about 4 years Arnold...they're not ready.

I do liek Ron Paul.

When I hear him speak, Im really taken back to the day when Republicans stood for Fiscal Responsibility, were against 'Nation Building', Keepin the State outta peoples private lives.

Now ... geesh ... this new-fangled Republican Party ... what can I say ... its EVERTHING we Conservatives useta DESPISE when I was growin up.

Arnold is right. McCain was elected by Independents as a maverick and a maverick he must remain. I'd like him to dismiss his social conservatism or take the same approach Arnold has regarding socially conservative issues. He also needs to emphasize a belief in the state's right to decide things for itself, like marriage law and environmental laws. Basically go back to old school classical liberalism combined with federalism. The Latino vote will be a big factor this election and they have been trending towards Republican. I'm not writing the GOP off... however, I don't see McCain winning easily even if he does as Arnold suggests. Unless the GOP decides to run to the left and go back to its progressive roots, they will have to try to play off as Libertarians.

avatar

Good points, mdiar. The Latinos and independents are a big factor in this election:

"(Republicans) have to move away from the status quo, because the voters up for grabs are independents and Latinos. They both move toward moderation."

Last week, McCain's efforts were keenly evident. McCain said that as president he'll ask Democrats to serve in his administration and vowed to "set a new standard for transparency and accountability...When we make errors, I'll confess them willingly."

Democrats immediately jabbed away. "McCain isn't the real McCoy - he's just a 'prime mimicker' of conservative Bush policies."

Schwarzenegger disagreed.

"It was wise for him to do what he did this week," the governor said. "That's an attempt to show what his vision is...People need to see that there's a plan. He's in the center in a lot of ways, and that will help him - especially in states like California."

Another big factor in this place, one not spoken of alot, is how the purple states go. At the end of the day the electoral college determines who wins. For the most part the Latino vote is in states that voted for Bush in 2000, excluding California and New Mexico. If the Latino vote goes for the GOP I think that New Mexico, at the very least, has the potential to go red in this election. I think California is safely in the hands of the Democratic nominee this time around. That's just my opinion. Another state to be looking at is Missouri. It voted for Bush last election... but the Republicans messed things up at the state level big time. The one term governor of Missouri is refusing to seek re-election and his Lt. Governor is following suit. The only Republican in Missouri that comes to mind seeking the office is a moderate (she comes from this town, actually). They also put in a Democratic Senator recently. Potential for blue is there.

I think it's gonna be a close one, regardless.

I agree. In the end it will be the states of Ohio, Missouri and Pennsylvania deciding. That's really what makes Hillary such a strong general election candidate. She can win Ohio and Pennsylvania far more easily.

I agree. This will definitely be an interesting election, to say the least.

In the Los Angeles area, the gang wars are between Blacks and Mexicans. I can't see Obama picking up much of the Mexican vote.

My cousin in the Midwest says the gang wars there are simply astoundin!

On the one side you got the Rich, White, Republicans ... and they are busy doin that 'snatch n grab' thing... Its AWFUL ... they are so callous ... so greedy. Everything is about Me Me Me.

They have been terrorizin the Vast Middle Class for years now ... But the Middle Class seem to be cooperatin, workin together, comin to an understandin with each other about what needs to be done to stop the Rich, White, Republican gangs lawlessness.

Klarissa, you can't think the gang wars depict the opinions of the entire black and Mexican voting populations?

When an entire high school breaks apart on racial lines, it is not a 'gang war'. This is about racial tensions between entire communities, and the murder of Jamiel Shaw set the fuse.

There is no hope of McCain winning in CA. Thank God. Arnold won because of his fame as an actor. He has not done as well as some think.

I do give him credit though for not following the suicidal tendencies of the neocons following the Bush line.

Lets just see how happy the populace of CA is when this mortgage crisis really hits home. I don't think Arnold or any other Republican or Democrat for that matter will be sitting pretty in the voters eyes.

I live here and deal with crap daily. There are more illegals here than in the rest of the nation. Hospitals are closing, schools are over crowded, gang warfare is on the rise, murder and violent crime are getting worse daily.

Housing is still unaffordable to most of the population, rent is sky high. Yeah a real good job being done here.

so, cowboy, you blame "neocons" for the illegal invasion of CA? That makes no sense at all. You don't think Democrats have had ANY part to play in the willful non-enforcement of our immigration laws? The Clinton Administration was in charge for 8 years during the 90's, when the problem got out of hand, and what did they do to deal with illegal immigration? Did they enforce the 1986 law? Did they enforce the 1996 law? The answer is NO. I would say Democrats are just as culpable as Republicans in creating this problem, with the difference being that it was Republicans, CONSERVATIVE Republicans who stopped John McCain and Ted Kennedy and Bush from shoving that massive amnesty bill down our throats a year ago. Democrats did almost NOTHING to stop that bill. Conservatives can take FULL credit for stopping it.

You ought to thank us, instead of insulting us, every chance you get.

avatar

svensun:

No I actually blame all the politicians for not enforcing the laws long ago. That would be back in the 60's and 70's.

I don't thank neocons. True conservatives such as Barry Goldwater , Eisenhower. Yeah I'd thank them.

Show me the conservatives of the past who want smaller government, less taxation on all people, no empire building, a strong America with a good base of mfg. jobs, not built on a service economy. A true non agression pact , but the will and might to defend ourselves and neighbors when needed. Not to make money. But to encourage Democracy.

Show me those conservatives. Them I will applaud, I'll join that party.

cowboy, Goldwater and Eisenhower DID NOT stop the 2007 amnesty bill; conservatives like John Cornyn and Pete Sessions stopped it dead in its tracks. And they did with the full-throated support of MILLIONS of conservatives across this country, the kind of people who listen to Rush, and Hannity, and Laura Ingraham, and a lot of others like them.

Barry Goldwater did not fix the immigration problem. I don't know how he felt about the border issue. Eisenhower solved the problem in his time, through Operation Wetback, which deported over a million illegal aliens, proving that mass deportations CAN BE DONE, if the government has the will.

Your desire to harken back to the conservative party of Bob Taft is admirable, and all, but it has nothing to do with the present discussion.

Believe me, the kind of GOP that Arnold is calling for has NOTHING to do with the type of conservatism you are describing.
