"The key is to use sleeping meds in moderation and don't mix them with other sedative drugs or alcohol. Most importantly, avoid use in the event you have to consider escalation from Defcon 4 to Defcon 3."

I completely understand why McCain might need a sleeping med while doing extensive traveling. My god, I don't know how the candidates manage that pace without compromising their health. Travel, strange environments, getting off your normal schedule, grabbing food when you have a spare moment...all of that contributes to an inability to sleep well. And yes, there are side affects to Ambien, but they're rare as described. McCain obviously tolerates the drug well, and I think this article is a bit over reactive.
