      As someone noted below, just because a vet is running as a Republican does NOT mean that they support the war in iraq, or that they are more "hawkish" as a result of their party affiliation.

        You mean they might be "textbook" REAL conservatives, or people who actually believe in smaller government and personal freedom?

        It wasn't so long that Republicans were against intervention in world war one.

        Then, if they could ditch the evangelicals and the religious right, they could be a patriotic american party.

  Definitely, more soldiers should run for office; whether Republican or Democrat.

  It provides experience to decision-making that has been lacking at our national level.

        Don't put all officers in the same lot. You have garret troopers in every branch and at ever rank. Over all I'd rather see someone with a military background rather than a former protesting hippy or welfare mom that went to school on the taxpayer's dime. Bill Clinton and my state's own Gwen Moore.

          Officers/privates, - I'd give them all the benefit of the doubt, - they serve, they get the respect; which doesn't mean I like them all. I dislike Ollie North and Bob Dole; but I would still cheer if they went by in the vet's parade.

          Since you bring it up, BB64, I have always wondered ...

          Wouldn't you have more respect for a clinton type, who basicly said, "I don't want to go and I don't want anyone else to go,"

          than for a cheney/rove/bush type who said 'great war, onward soldiers', but found diferent ways of staying here?

          BB64: I have to say, after reading your comments for a while, that I always hover over the good vote until the second half of your comment. I almost always like what you say in the begining. It may be totally meaningness to you, but if you did split your words between your lucid observations and your digs at the party I happen to vote for, there would be a bunch of little bugs when you looked at who gave you a positive vote.

          You're spot on about the officers. There are all different kinds. There's especially a big division between the ones that worked their way out of being Enlisted and the ones who started right off the bat in officer's school.

  first, i don't think we can assume that just because a vet is running as a republican that they support the war in iraq, or that they are more "hawkish" as a result of their party affiliation.

  second, i too, think it's great that more vets are running for office regardless of party. civilians can never really "get" what it is like to engage in armed combat...and all the attendant ugliness. i think more vets will mean more restraint when it comes to engaging in warfare.

    That would be my hope. Maybe legislators who have faced the dirty job of combat will be less inclined to send others to war.

      Guys perhaps you should either visit Iraq or at least talk with the vets that came back. I volunteer our local VA and work directly with guys who were shot or blown up. They're mainly injuries involving lost limbs or rehab caused by internal injuries. I don't work with the head traumas, that takes a person with more skills than I can offer. I'll wheel them around, work with them on the rehab, listen if they need someone not related to them to talk to and share what little I can. Everyone of them wants to go back. No matter how much they've lost, they want to return to their units or at least help them out. Legs or arms missing from IED's and they want to go back. One that sticks in my mind was a young buck sergeant. Lost his leg but was doing great with the rehab. Fought with the Army doctor for reinstatement. He's now in Iraq, assigned to logistics for his striker team. Not combat but at least he's helping his buddies again.

        I also work at the local VA and this is my experience as well. However the reason they want to go back is not because they support the war or the reasons behind the war. It is the sense of brotherhood/sisterhood and not wanting to let down the others they left behind.

  This is good news. Even though it was to be expected.

  I actually have a West Point grad who served 3 tours in Iraq and another in Afghanistan running for th state house. He has my full support. Especially since the dem who is running against hims claim to fame is that he owned a dairy queen. (Which is now a used tire shop) FTR, isn't that the ultimate sign of a bad neighborhood? A used tire shop that was formerly a restaurant?
