If elected president, Senator John McCain would reserve the right to run his own warrantless wiretapping program against Americans, based on the theory that the president's wartime powers trump federal criminal statutes and court oversight, according to a statement released by his campaign Monday.

Expanding the powers of the presidency offsets the balance of power in our government and is coming closer and closer to a dictatorship. When congress and the judiciary can be ignored by the president, then who checks his powers?

  Conservatives who think this is just *awesome* should consider how they'd feel if these powers were granted to president Obama, or President Clinton.
  Checks and balances are *vital* to the proper functioning of our government. I can't imagine that Bush would have been able to wreak such havoc on our Constitution and the rest of the world if Congress had done its job.
