I've traveled internationally for 15 years. The U.S. has been seen in a negative light for all of this time. It may be slightly more acute in the Middle East, but it has been negative for most of my adult life. The change in the Middle East is understandable. Our relationship in Latin America has been little better, with the vast exception of Brazil.
The article indicates that our desire to promote democracy is part of the reason for the drop in our image. OK, guilty as charged. Gee. sorry.
I remember it being about this bad in Europe in the 80s. Everybody seemed to hate America, because we and the Soviets were going to "nuke all of Europe" (actual quote from a Brit I know).
This is likely a blip, and things will get better. If you travel internationally, behave yourself and try to make friends with locals. You'll find that we're not that different.

The article does not indicate that it is our desire to promote democracy is part of the reason. It states that our promotion of democracy while backing brutal dictators, etc is part of the reason. It's called hypocrisy.
