I am the last male in my family to go to war.

The military history of my family in America dates from Vietnam back through Korea, WW2 & the Civil War(North and South). It is a distinguished history but a sad one due to lost loved ones taken by the Gods of war.

When my youngest son turned 18 he was well aware of the accumulated military history of our family and asked me if I thought he should 'join' the military (I joined for 'Nam. If not, I would of been drafted.) to basically continue the tradition. I told him that as far as I was concerned that was really his choice. However, if I was him I would go to college and get a degree because he would be the first male in many family generations that did not feel compelled or forced by the draft to fight in a war.

He could now 'choose'. Because the ones, including myself that went before him, fought for that right and freedom to have a choice and would be proud of him for choosing college over the military. He Choose college.

I was never prouder of him.

Hopefully he will tell his children the same when it is their turn. I will encourage that.

Wars, over the generations, have taken a terrible toll on this family.

Hopefully, with him, that has finally stopped.

      Hopefully.

Greed for people like Dick Cheney and the owner of Blackwater is competitive sport.
