The party of Obama and Pelosi is out there just pounding away at the Big Oil companies over the high price of gas at the pump. Greedy, they say. Heartless, they claim. Mean, cold, and uncaringly rich, they insist.

"Yet in the v-e-r-r-r-r-y quiet precincts that represent the intersection between a key constituency of Democrats -- public employee unions -- and the pension funds that provide for said employees when they retire, guess what? Yes, indeed, these fine liberals are going out of their way to invest in...Big Oil. You read that right. At the intersection of Big Union and Big Money streets, the streets that can take you to Big Power Avenue, the political clout of the Democrats is being fueled by huge investments in Big Oil."

I wonder if all the people who constantly rail at Big Oil on this site realize that their pension funds and mutual funds are probably invested in oil stocks.......

What bothers me is the long history of Republicans, particular the Bush Clan, and Big Oil money. Prescott Bush was involved with the Nazis and Oil, so it is no surprise Condoleeza Rice is a major share holder in a gas company. Drilling in ANWAR has been an issue since I worked on the Hill in 2000. The republican drive to drill off the coast of Alaska has nothing to do with moving the dollar from the Middle East. It is about making more gas, bigger margins, and more money.

They're the greedy ones. They are the ones who want to take the profits from oil comapanies because they don't think that private corporations should be allowed to make so much money.

How is it that you right wingers always seem to know down to the penny when poor people are getting "too much" welfare but your tax dollars funding breaks for oil companies should be limitless? How is that, tangy?

        Hmm. So, -

Democrats say that Oil companies are unjustly profiting from jacked-up prices, - but many democrats and their supporters profit from oil stocks.

Seems like they could brag; since they are calling to close loopholes from which they profit.

So you need to state the rule plainly: Like this:

'It is hypocricy to profit from what you disaprove.'

        Nice and clear.

But it's a tough rule, hard to live by, easy to qualify.

But when we state a moral rule for others, we bind ourselves to keep the rule as well. It's how morality works.

Good luck with your stock portfolios.

Morality and politics are approx 180 degress apart on the 'reality scale'.

On the 'Spin and PR scale' they are one and the same.

"Better yet, what about the unions sitting on the boards of funds like Calpers following Senator Boxer's advice? How about turning over the profits these union pension fund managers have gleaned from all those profiteering oil companies and just set up a gas fund for the rest of us -- giving those of us not vested in a teachers "Big Oil" pension fund the relief at the pump that we all deserve? The idea is so...well...Jimmy Carteresque. Or perhaps I should now say Obamaesque. Morally superior. Presuming fairness. Taking the profits from the rich oil companies to give to the poor. Think of the great slogans for the anti-oil pension fund marches. Don't Teach for Oil or Stop Rigging Teachers Retirement or No Oil for Pensions. Maybe we will even see Democrats like Senator Obama starting to refuse support from teachers unions on principle. After all, he doesn't take support from Big Oil, right?"

You have to admit this is a diabolically clever win-win strategy. You might even call it a teachable moment: liberals attack Big Oil to get votes while in fact their union pals are quietly raking in hundreds of millions from owning it, getting all the political power that comes along in the bargain. If they ever get the chance to do the Obama-Jimmy Carter windfall profits tax, the oil companies will simply pass the cost on to you and me, making us all contribute even more millions to teacher pensions every time we fill up.

So, it's the liberal democrats and their minions who are making a profit on high gasoline prices. Hypocrite is too good a word for weasels like these.

Isn't it great that the Repugs didn't ask the Big Oil CEOs to tell the truth to Congress - Ted Stevens said they didn't even have to pledge to tell the truth. Secret Energy meetings with Dems did not occur; but those with repugs like Ken Lay did, that are now classified by Cheney!

Dems asked the Repugs in the 109th "Do Nothing" Congress Energy Bill to look at why Californians were charged 400% for energy in the last California crisis, and were ignored! Ever listen to those tapes of Enron Execs laughing about california grandmothers being unable to pay for electricity?

Yes, this article is on cue!

I believe you've forgotten all about Gary Condit's alibi in the Chandra Levy murder case.

He was attending a "secret big oil" meeting.

I think we can safely say that both sides of the political spectrum have had their share of dirty deals. We have better things to poke each other in the eye on than the obvious.

We should better argue about the intent of capitalism, and who it helps. For me, I don't care who makes money by investing in Big Oil. Heck, count me in. The real positive that is not being spoken to by anyone is the gain being had in the economy due to Big Oil: jobs, capital investment, dividends, and the list goes on.

After years of scraping to get by, I'm proud that these companies have turned it around. That's a real American success story. Their success has allowed them to share some of the wealth with us.

And I don't think it's too much. I don't want to punish these guys; I want to emulate them. Their businesses thrive in a tough industry, and yet they give generously to organizations that help the less fortunate.

--Not everyone is willing to wh0re their soul for a buck and a good economy. I think this is why right wingers don't get why Bush is so unpopular worldwide. There really is more to life than having a job and turning a profit.
