It struck me today that our fearless leaders, would-be's, and corporate giants seem to think we're all a bunch of rubes gathered outside a carnival sideshow, leaning on the barker's every word. Urging Congress to lift its ban on offshore oil and gas drilling, our fearless leader: "There is no excuse for delay".

A dog and pony show to be sure. While any new wells will help, none will be producing for years and won't help anything now.

"Think about it for a minute. There are approximatley 68 million acres of offshore waters under lease by oil companies at this moment, but none are under development."

I want to see proof of this statement, I think this guy might mean 68 million acres of leases the oil companies hold in the United States. Btw, the oil companies pay for these leases just to look for oil and there is no guarantee that oil will be there. ANWR and certain sites off shore have already been surveyed and there are large amounts of oil. So why can't we drill where the oil is instead of asking the oil companies to look for it somewhere else?

The price of oil will drop just on the announcement that the United States is lifting the bans and will start drilling.

Thanks for pointing that out Wolfie. No sense in making personal attacks - I've never claimed to have a solution for petroleum addiction. I just cover news about alternatives, and I don't take responsibility for what's been written in other people's posts.

We can drill for more oil as much as we want, but it's never going to solve our petroleum problems...

If we could flood the market, maybe... but we control about 3% of global oil reserves. We use about 24% of global production, and demand in China and India is growing. Hard to see how other oil-producing countries will get too concerned.
