"If we failed to develop alternative sources of renewable energy and conserve what we have, the alternative could be nasty. As Carter pointed out: "We will have a crash program to build more nuclear plants, strip-mine and burn more coal, and drill more offshore wells than we will need if we begin to conserve now. Inflation will soar, production will go down, people will lose their jobs. Intense competition will build up among nations and among the different regions within our own country. "If we fail to act soon, we will face an economic, social and political crisis that will threaten our free institutions." - JIMMY CARTER

And people hated Jimmy because he appeared ineffective in freeing the U.S. hostages in Iran...while Reagan, his opponent for president in 1980, was sabotaging his efforts by illegally negotiating with terrorists himself.

And that reminds me--wasn't Reagan doing the same thing Republicans are complaining about Obama *proposing* to do legally--sitting down and talking to criminal terrorists in Iran?

The difference is that Reagan actually made deals with terrorists on is own, and sold them arms illegally, bypassing Congress.

Reagan delayed the hostages' release until after he took office so as not to give any credit to Carter, (showing GREAT concern for the hostages by extending their stay in Iran) and he later gave these same terrorists arms in exchange for cash with which to fund his secret war in Nicaragua...training Osama bin-Laden along the way.

Amazing. THIS is the guy Republicans see as a demi-God.

Carter viewed the source of the problem as "rapidly diminishing resources."

To grasp the magnitude of his ignorance, one need only ask: "Do we have MORE or LESS proven oil reserves today than we did when Carter spoke those words?"

The author blames Bush and his staff for not doing THEIR research ????

Notwithstanding, Carter made valid points about establishing energy policy, his premise for doing so was clearly flawed and may likely have led him to implement disasterous policies as a result.

Carter let the reserves go almost dry and had to ration gas because the oil-producing companies had us over a barrel
