Lobbying positions are luring more and more politicians away from government and into "K street". The legislators that can make this type of practice illegal clearly won't. So what should the American people do to stop this travesty?

All we have is the vote & our voices. It would require the organized effort of millions of Americans. I don't see that happening.

That is the trillion dollar question, jovial. If Congress were held by the electorate to pass legislation outlawing fraternizing with paid lobbyists altogether it would be a start.

Then, it would require enforcement. The only way this will happen is if voters demand a commitment from their representative / candidate that they will support such legislation, if elected.

For every unscrupulous politician who fails to keep his or her word must be denied the opportunity to hold any future public office. With a meaningful precedent of that nature, we could see a future without a country owned and paid for by organized crime.

Once it became known that it is political suicide to support lobbying in any form, then and only then can we get back the representation that we deserve in this country.

      A tall order, huh? LOL!

Indeed! That's a tall order. We are asking them to not take these enormous salaries.

The K Street model is the same as the "Iron Triangle" involving uncontrolled Pentagon corruption. The Iron Triangle has been screwing Americans ever since Reagan and it has gotten much worse under Bush. Particularly infuriating is that now Pentagon corruption is protected from investigation by declaring "national security" gag orders.

We have almnost 30 years of corruption to undo.

What 'Iron Triangle' Means in Washington

... To give an example of the iron triangle Mr. Smith speaks of the military triangle of the Defense Department, the Congressional armed services committees and defense contractors. He shows that the failure of Mr. Reagan's former Secretary of Defense, Caspar W. Weinberger, to control the Pentagon point of the triangle is largely responsible for our huge deficit - with no discernible improvement in the quality of our weapons systems...

Conservatives and Their Carnival of Fraud

Politics รข;; Did Adam Smith-tied evangelists of "limited government" have any idea they were greasing the skids for 22-year-old arms dealers? How could a kid barely able to buy beer secure a nearly $300 million defense contract? When they finally put their theory into practice, conservatives contrived one of the most wasteful systems ever seen.

That "Iron Triangle" has been in existence (and has operated VERY effectively) since the administration of Woodrow Wilson. It was exposed and discredited by the Nye Committee investigations in the 1930s, and its exposure resulted in the Neutrality Act of 1934, which was renewed in 1936 and modified in 1938. It is disingenuous to try to place the blame specifically upon President Reagan--it was around long before. In fact, President Eisenhower, in his Farewell Address, famously warned against the "military-industrial complex"--who do you think he was talking about? Snow White qand the Seven Dwarfs?

This is not, or should not be, a partisan issue. This is an issue of honesty, decency, accountability, and basic good government.

As a long time resident of the DC area, I get amused at references to 'K St' or 'Inside the Beltway'. What exactly is on K St or how many of the 2 million or so souls living Inside the Beltway are political insiders? For me and many long time residents here, K St is mostly associated with Scholl's, a low cost cafeteria restaurant on the corner of K and 17th streets, two blocks north of the White House, which sadly, is no longer there. No intrigue in that.
