Does Patriotism Matter? »
Posted by: bigurn 2 months agoWith the full commission of a global society, many are losing their national identity. Some in Europe blame the EU for what they consider a loss of their history. Is such a thing going on in America? Are we lifted by our history, or held down by it?

America is in a unique position, both geographically and politically. We are clearly in a leadership position in North America, so there is little reason to surrender our national identity to any sort of North American Union. Further, our world leadership position demands of us a different conduct. We should demonstrate how a leader-nation should conduct itself, both internally and internationally.
These ideals should spring from the moral values taught to us by our predecessors, both in their successes and in their failures. And we owe it to the succeeding generations of Americans to pass on leadership to them.
Patriotism, then, is indispensible and necessary.

Of all the dispositions and habits, which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and Citizens. The mere Politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connexions with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked, Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect, that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.

I think ethics and our Constitution bring us together. Ethics can be passed on through philosophy and convention without adherence to now useless vestiges of the ancient (like wings on crawling insects).
I think Jefferson was correct in his hope that young men would become Unitarians and leave behind the ancient metaphors that provide useful wisdom but are obsolete as complete systems.

This is a good article and I think its important to make a distinction here that to few are willing to make. Patriotism and nationalism are not the same thing. Patriotism sent man to the moon and won World War 2. Nationalism caused World War 2 and decimated several nations. Both are done in the name of the country... but one is a very positive force and the other is very much a negative force.
Patriotism is good. Nationalism is not, normally.

Patriotism is about love of country. Respect for the valuse your country represents. Respect for the traditions handed down from generation to Generation. If you have to make a speech to prove you are Patriotic, you probably are not really Patriotic.

Sowell has a gift for saying the right kinds of things clearly. This is an excellent example. Now if he would only run for president.
