Jesse Helms will be remembered as one of the leading figures in the rise of the Republican Party in the South - a person who helped move conservative Democrats to the GOP. But was Helms a throwback to the Dixiecrats who used race to divide people? Or was he a visionary who helped create a conservative renaissance in the country?

    This article tries to make him out to be some kind of renaissance man. He was a bigot. He is finally dead where he can be judged.
