The one really intriguing question I've been asked, from a book buyer, is whether I thought John Ashcroft had been pushed out after he refused to sign off on the warrantless wiretaps. The honest answer is, yes, that had Ashcroft done the wrong thing, the unconstitutional thing, and signed off on it, he'd probably still be the Attorney General.

Ashcroft was one of the conservatives who actualy believed in morals, the constitution, God and all the noble things a neo-con knows in his heart are words, only words; to be used like game pieces in the political fight.

Powell; McCain; Huckabee; Hagle; now that I think about it there were many. But they spoke too softly and too late to do their country any good.

after powell's speech to the UN justifying the iraq war, that he knew was full of lies? i don't think so.

ashcroft is a more difficult case. how did he get to be attorney general? by losing the senate election to mel carnahan, who happened to die in a mysterious small plane crash just before the election.

Wish the article had covered the Ashcroft business a bit more. I had the same gut reaction when I heard about his resignation. Uh oh, payback for standing up for his staff. The White House values loyalty, but only if it is loyalty of the staff to those above them.
