The papers are saying that Merkel's objection changed Obama's mind. Maybe so, but I bet the majority opinion of the common Germans had an impact as well.

The Brandenburg Gate is a national symbol, predating the Nazis and harkening back to the unification of the German state. Some Germans may fear that allowing Obama to use the site to polish his political image would seem too much like an endorsement of his candidacy.
When John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan visited, the Brandenburg Gate had become a symbol of a different sort--it was visible monument to the division of the city and the German nation between competing Eastern and Western European ideologies. Kennedy did not speak there, but he laid a wreath in memory of those who died during the Second World War. Later, at Potsdamer Platz, he delivered his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech. After his assassination, the City of Berlin renamed the site of that address, so that today you can visit "Kennedy Platz."
The Germans may, as the article suggests, largely favor Barack Obama, but they are reluctant to give the appearance of interfering in an American election.

Ah but while it is the Chancellor that is opposed as it might show a German preference to the race; it is up to the Mayor of Berlin if it will happen and he is a Dem who loves to poke at the Chancellor.

libs - Didn't you read the article? Obama himself said he didn't want this to be a controversy. Obama asked. Germany said no. Obama says okay. End of controversy. Who is forcing what?
Typical Con maneuvers -
1)Focus on the trivial detail and make a big fuss to divert attention away from the actual issues and the candidate himself.
2)Also say something that the candidate did not do so that it seems the candidate actually did it.
The main point Cons are desperate to cover up is - The Germans hate Bush.

What an obnoxious little note. The Germans do not want Obama to make a campaign speech. Obama says he did not want to create controversy. So he agrees to change of locale.
Did Obama have a temper tantrum and demand things the way he wanted it? Just like Cheney did at the CIA and Pentagon intelligence about Iraq information?
No, Obama did not. He agreed to the wishes of the German government. End of controversy. You cons love to stir the mud up and cover up the fact that the Germans are eager to hear what Obama has to say and they hate Bush and McCain.
McCain asked Obama to visit Iraq. Now I am asking McCain to speak in Germany and see the reaction he gets there.

Barak Obama has two astounding characteristics his giant ego and his arrogance. Why is he is he going to make a speech to the Germans it's not like they can vote. This whole trip makes no sense for a US Presidential candidate to make. Does he and his 300 advisers think this will get votes here at home?

nostalgia - "He wanted a huge crowd of cheering, swooning Germans so we could all watch on TV. Trying to convince us he has worldwide support."
HHMMM! Interesting. If he has a "huge" audience, then he does not have worldwide support? Spock says, "That is not logical."
If McCain has worldwide support, let's see him speak in Germany and see if he gets "a huge crowd of cheering, swooning Germans." I double and triple dare McCain to do so.
Face it. Germans hate Bush and McCain.

You know what? I challenge McCain to also speak in Germany and see the reaction he gets.
Remember right after Rumsfeld "resigned," (chuckle, chuckle) he went to France for a speech. The French issued an arrest warrant for Rumsfeld as a war criminal. Made him hightail it out of there.
Your post also reveals you to be just a Limbaugh/Bush clone. You want to deny others w/ different opinions their constitutional right to speak.
I do not want to deny McCain the right to speak. The more he speaks, the more he reveals himself to be narrow-minded, anachronistic, and incapable of becoming president.
With people like you surrounding Bush, no wonder he wanted to create a unitary executive branch, subvert the Department of Justice, wiretap everyone, abrogate the Geneva Convention, and torture prisoners.
How evil and arrogant the entire administration is. McCain is Bush's clone (now), he will be just as arrogant and evil.

"Wouldnt it be funny if he was told he was not allowed to speak everywhere he went. To bad we cant tell him that here..."
Yes, how unfortunate indeed.
How very Neocon of you. Yes, wouldn't it be nice to have no debate, no free exchange of ideas. In fact, why even have free elections. Just invoke the executive order and suspend the election. Then just eliminate the opposition and lock up all dissenters and those who would disagree with your Bushtapo. Lots of room in Guantanamo for those who don't bow down and worship at the altar of George The God King.
Admit it. The prospect excites you, doesn't it?

Ohhh here we go with the name calling again Donald.
It shows that you can't hold up your end of a discussion.
I would like to hear Obama talk to the people that are voting instead of a bunch of non voters in another country.
Is he afraid to do anything that is not rehearsed?
He won't do Town Hall Meetings with McCain.
He only talks at his own rallies with his Kool Aid drinking audiences and a teleprompter.
Is he afraid to talk to the rest of us and answer some questions that we have? It sure looks that way.
