When anyone invests $300 million dollars into promoting alternative energy sources, the Democrats usually take notice. When that person is an oil tycoon, brother of a "Bush Pioneer", and someone who was a major contributor to the 2004 Swift Boat ads, that person gets an invitation from Nancy Pelosi to speak before the House Democratic Ca

Let's face it, the guy's an oilman. He can make money in way he wants. This plan wouldn't seem so bad coming from Bill Gates or another wealthy person outside of the field, but this feels like a tobacco company backing a plan to make people quit smoking. It seems like something is fishy until you realize they own a ton of stocks in "The Patch" or something else.

Pickens has made his money. He is known for eccentric spending, including donating over $100 million to his alma mater to help them put in better sports facilities. Any other oilman and I would question it. Pickens - he means what he says and he says what he means.

The Pickens Plan is an interesting one. I'm not totally sold on wind energy being the sole savior, as there are several other promising technologies and fuel sources that would help this plan to be more solid.

Wind can never be the sole source

There are already wind farms in west TX. They had one day a year or 2 ago when the wind just suddenly died.

Other plants had to come online to prevent a total loss of power to many areas

That is why there are plants in TX that are paid to operate in standby mode and be ready to come on in a few minutes if necessary

I've been watching his ads on TV in California. I'm keeping an open mind on all alternative sources of energy. I'm on the waiting list for the Chevy Volt which I'll charge from my solar panel. Pretty much no fossil fuel transportation for me.

Mr. Pickens is in error in his commercial when he states that the billions we send to foreign nations to buy oil is the "largest transfer of wealth in history."

Wrong, Mr. Pickens. Mr. Bush with his tax cuts to the upper fraction of wage earners achieved that. The deficit that created has resulted in an almost 10 trillion national debt in just 7 years.

His plan to harness solar, wind, and make more efficient use of petroleum is worth considering.

You need to listen to the interviews with Pockens not just his ads. As noted in the article "you're going to have 20 or 30 years to bridge to that point."

Interviewers have asked him how he would bridge the 20-30 year gap

His answer - drill more oil to get us to the point when we a independent of foreign oil. I doubt you will hear about this part of his plan from many Democrats

At least Pickens is a realist

You also need to realize that the "wind tunnel" Pickens always talks about is located in the Great Plains

Transmission lines need to be built to deliver the electricity to the populated areas

By 2014, Mr. Pickens wants to have 4,000 megawatts of windmills turning in a $10 billion to $12 billion project.

But he faces one knotty problem: Moving the power from the rural Panhandle to populous North Texas.

The PUC developed scenarios for new lines that could cost between $3 billion and $6.4 billion, depending on how much power the lines would carry.

            http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus...

This is where the Federal government needs to get involved. The power grid is in desparate need of attention all across the US

If the PUC in TX won't build the transmission lines, Pickens said he would do it himself

Instead of Congress getting involved in picking winners and losers in alternative energy, let them start with upgrading the power grid so it can accomodate new energy and have the ability to route the energy to where it is needed

"Why do democrats love the Pickens Plan?"

They won't like it at all if they read the small print. Pickens actually says we have to drill and soon. lol
